If you have read my posts lately, you probably know I'm ind of obsessed with this new OmenX project. With alt season being so... non existent and there being a bit of negativity on Hive, it is nice to have something to purely dream and hope about. I'm sure things will get more positive around Hive when the price bounces back, but there is something about a new project that makes you think, "Maybe this can be a unicorn". I have no idea if OmenX will be that unicorn, but it is fun to dream.
But luckily, it is not just a vaporware dream. OmenX is actually creating things. It already has a proof of concept probability based game that is actually pretty strategic and fun, but you really need tokens to play that. Well a few days ago, the platform released its first purely for fun game... well not purely as you can win OmenX tokens. The game is legit fun and is 100% free to play. You can improve your experience and move up the leader board faster if you spend a little OmenX but it is nothing outrageous and it is 100% optional. I have only spent a little bit and am relying on grinding out gold in missions to improve my Sloths' stats. Most importantly, I am having a tn of fun while playing. Although I play on my laptop, it can be played on mobile and seems a lot like the mobile games I constantly have to tell my students to stop playing. A full round can take as little as three minutes (which means a kid would try and play twice during the 5 minute passing period). Rounds can be longer if you want, but you can choose the faster games or longer games depending on time and preference. So it is super faced paced and gives you a quick dopamine boost.
I don't know if anyone realizes this... but I am very old. I saw the original Star wars in the theater. That type of old. So I remember the first video game arcades. Cosmic Sloths kind of reminds me a little of the original Asteroids with far better graphics, better controls and way more variety... with a little bit of Smash TV mixed in for good measure. Instead of a triangle ship, you are a Sloth-Human mix in a very cool battle-suit. Your Sloth starts in the middle of the screen and enemies come from all directions. Each enemy has different traits, speeds and abilities so it adds to the challenge, novelty and fun. Every time you destroy an enemy, it leaves behind a XP gem. Stronger enemies leave behind more valuable gems. Sometimes the enemy also leaves behind gold. You need your maneuver your Sloth to pick up these gems and gold as you fight off more and more enemies. The Smash TV aspect comes in with the fact that your weapons fire automatically and you are able to upgrade them as you collect enough XP to move up experience levels. Sadly there is none telling you "I'd buy that for a dollar!" But we can overlook that.
Of course as the round goes on, the enemies get stronger, faster and more plentiful. This means you have to be wise in the upgrades you choose on each level. Although the upgrades are randomized, you always get three upgrades to choose one from. Because of this randomization, no two rounds can ever be exactly alike. To further add to the fun, different combinations of upgrades provide different specialized weapons or effects. It's actually quite amazing.
After a round, you are taken back to the Sloth Lounge where you can spend your gold. There are so many things to spend your gold on. You can upgrade, Plasma Output (gun), Hull Integrity (HP), Thruster Speed, Tractor Range (for collecting gems and gold), Nano Repair (HP Regen), System Cooling (Cool-down between special abilities) and Cosmic Fortune (luck at finding cool things like nukes that destroy everything on the screen). There are also weekly and daily upgrades of all of those. And that is not even counting the Armory and Talent improvements you can buy with gold. There is honestly so much to upgrade that it is incredible! I won't even get into using things called "relics" to further upgrade and improve weapons. Just trust me, there are plenty of things to keep chasing.
The game also features bonuses just for logging in each day. You can get gold or relics just for keeping your login streak alive. Of course all of this can be sped up by spending OmenX... but it is not essential. If you do spend OmenX on these upgrades or to re-roll your random upgrades during the game, those tokens go into a prize pool that is distributed to the highest scores for the week in the leader board. It is honestly a great system.
Although I love the game, the most impressive thing is that the OmenX game developer platform is so user friendly that this game was created by a community member with no previous developer experience. And he did it in about one month. I actually started testing the game after he worked on it for a week and it was already incredibly. The developer continues to listen to player feedback and is constantly making improvements. I can't believe how fast he is push out these improvements!
Seeing how incredible a game made by a novice is has my mouth watering at the idea of what a professional developer can do. I can't wait!
So if you were waiting to sign up for OmenX, now is the time. Get in early! And if you do want to spend money (not financial advice) the VIP program is still live for about 12 weeks.
