For some reason, there is a lot of hate directed at Disney for their Marvel Cinematic Universe. To be honest, I do not understand it at all. I thank Disney for having the vision... and the money... to create an incredible deep Marvel Universe. Even the worst Marvel movie is better than 90% of other super hero movies made over the past 50 years. But this does not mean I was nervous not when I heard that Disney would be continuing the Daredevil television show that began on Netflix in 2015.
One of the best things about the Netflix Daredevil show was how dark, gritty, violent and realistic it was. Because the show is about a vigilante in a violent city, it had to be R-rated. There was going to be swearing. There was going to be over the top violence. There are plenty of characters for little kids but Daredevil is not one of them. This led to Daredevil having some of the most amazing hand-to-hand combat sequences ever filmed.
I was incredibly worried that Disney would reduce Daredevil to another PG-13 action show. My god was I wrong! Disney did not mess with a single thing. They brought back Chris Brewster to continue his role as fight choreographer and Charlie Cox's stunt double. They did not tone down a single word or reduce one ounce of violence. In fact, in some ways, they amped it up. And that is what season two of Daredevil: Born Again is all about... action.
While season one did an amazing job of bridging the gap between 2018 and 2025 with an incredibly compelling story, season two brings that story to a pulse pounding, eye and ear shattering conclusion. While season one really only had action in a few episodes, season two has an incredible action sequence in every episode culminating in an unforgettable one.
Clearly Charlie Cox has been drinking his milk as he somehow came back even more badass this season. And his stunt double has clearly been itching to show off what he can do. This results in some of the coolest fight scenes I have ever seen on TV.
Oh. And the best thing about Disney is that they were able to bring back Vincent D'Onofrio as Kingpin for the entirety of both seasons. Even though I loved the action of the Netflix series, the best thing about it was Kingpin. Marvel has done an incredible job with casting, but there is no batter casting than D'Onfrio as Kingpin. He was perfect in every way! That is one of the reasons I enjoyed the first season even though it had very little action. That season was all about showcasing Kingpin's bizarre internal struggle to be a hero by being a villain. This season was all about showing how combining those two things are impossible... oh and action.
not
Now how about that story? I loved it! Seeing Kingpin try to save the city by killing the city was incredible. The political intrigued, spying, and chess match between Kingpin and basically the entire world was remarkable. There are also some incredible performances by some awesome returning characters but I won't spoil that.
We all know I refuse to spoil anything but for now all I can say is that the only problem I had with the entire series was the very end. And I'm not upset with the writers... that much. It is more a reflection of society, justice, inequality and the court system that left me feeling hollow at the end. But that is OK. Daredevil was never meant to be an uplifting tale of good triumphing over evil. It is more about the value of fighting for good even though you can't really ever win because it keeps coming back... even if you shoot it right in the eye.
