If you have been reading my posts lately you probably noticed that I have been ending my posts with information about a new crypto gaming platform called OmenX. No this does not mean that I have given up on hive. In fact, I just wrote a post titled "I still haven't given up on Hive". But that does not mean I can't recognize and enjoy new opportunities out there. I mean just because I enjoy playing Baldur's Gate 3 on my Steamdeck it doesn't mean that I can't also enjoy playing X-Com 2 on my PlayStation. The video game (and crypto) space is big enough for two passion projects.
And that is exactly what OmenX is for me... a passion project. This is the first time I have been this excited about a project since way back in 2016 when I accidentally stumbled up the platform that would fork into Hive. It just made sense. Back in 2016, I was lucky enough to meet a couple of people in the project who were super positive and had some high hopes about the future of the Hive precursor. Most of those people gave up... but not me. I still believe Hive has the tech to take off some day. And I think games will be a huge part of that. We already have one of the best and most successful crypto games ever in Splinterlands so there is evidence that this place can be a hub for gaming. But it might be time for other games to look at some other projects and see what is making them successful. I strongly suggest anyone interested in bringing games to Hive take a look at OmenX. They have really figured out how to launch a gaming platform. OmenX went live about three months ago and almost immediately launched a game that is heavy in earning crypto rewards called OmenX Wars.
The game is in Alpha so this is NOT the final artwork. The Ships and bosses are going to look way cooler.
If you are familiar with Gomining and their game "Mining Wars", OmenX Wars is similar... but far more fun. Mining Wars is purely for earning crypto rewards. It is like a slot machine with some power up buttons. It is fun to win, but not much fun for anything else. The creator of OmenX basically looked at all of the complaints that people had about Miner Wars and said "I can do that much better and in a far more fun way"... and then he did it.
The creator of OmenX wars really tried to gamify the bet and hope to win model. In Miner Wars, you compete against other people to have the highest chance to win the reward pool. You get a chance to win a round of the game by owning a virtual BTC miner. The more powerful your miner, the more of a chance you have to win a round. In addition, you can increase your chance to win by casting "spells" that boost the power of your miner. But basically in the end, it is just like buying raffle tickets. The more raffle tickets you have, the better your chance to win. So if you have a miner and spells that racked up 95% of the points that round, you do have a 95% chance to win... but it is randomized so even someone with 1% could win if their block generated number gets pulled. It's almost as complicated as the NBA lottery. Lots of whales on OmenX have made some very good returns playing the game. But it has flaws. Up until recently, you had to be on your computer to play. Because some of your "spells" increase your odds exponentially over time it is essential to make sure to get in at the start of the round. So this meant a lot of sitting with your computer on your lap while watching TV. The rounds also had certain multipliers so you could win significantly more if you won those rounds. There wasn't much strategy as many people just waited for a round to start, checked the multiplier and either bought spells or not. Don't get me wrong, I played it and enjoyed it... but I enjoyed like a slot machine.
In OmenX wars, you never know what the multiplier will be. But you do has some control over it... which adds some excitement. Both Mining Wars and OmenX wars rounds end when a BTC Block ends. This can happen in 30 seconds or 90 minutes. You never know. But in OmenX wars, the multiplier is not determined randomly. It is determined by how much damage you do to a boss. Oh yeah... I forgot about bosses. Remember when I mentioned the founder of OmenX well he has been a video game designer for 30 years and has been in crypto for over a decade. So he is the rare breed of being a game designer first and crypto guy second. In this space, that is a unicorn! So he gets that games need to be more than just a crypto farm... they need to be fun! As a result, OmenX Wars has bosses each level. Each boss is a monster that needs to be destroyed. The players have ships (piloted by Sloths... of course) that need to work together to destroy the boss. Each boss has a unique name and different mysterious shields. Instead of counting points, the players are doing damage to the boss. The more damage everyone does to the boss, the higher the multiplier goes... if you get past the different levels of shields. The multiplier can be anywhere between 1x and 256x. In practice, the multiplier is usually 2x to 4x with some rare occasions where it hits 128 x or 256x. But it can't get to those levels without people upgrading their attacks during the round. Players need to spend OmenX during the round in order to increase their damage. The do some damage base don NFTs they own (kind of like Mining Wars miners) but can add to the damage by buying upgrades with OmenX (kind of like spells).
And that is the amazing thing. The project is in its infancy at only 3 months old and there is already a utility for the OmenX token. More utility cases keep coming and there will be far more in the future but it is an amazing start. Some of the other utility cases for the token include ships that will be available shortly. These ships will pair with NFTs people have purchased to create both passive and active boosts to the damage they can do. People can also increase their damage per second by buying hanger space with OmenX. There are also other NFTs, called asset managers, being released that will impact a player's damage per second. And this is not even counting the other games that have been and will be released. This games allow players to earn OmenX and also spend it IF THEY CHOOSE TO. They already have a legit free to play game that puts fun first and crypto rewards second. It is not a play to win game. It is a have fun and pay if you you think it is worth it game... that you can actually result in winning OmenX tokens.
Speaking of OmenX tokens... you can legitimately get some for free every week. Right now, all you have to do is sign up and you will get at least 5 free OmenX every week. Yes that is a small amount, but it is enough to boost a few rounds of OmenX Wars or use it to upgrade your character in Cosmic Sloths (which I will write about next). You also get access to a daily spin that gives you a chance to win more OmenX for free or VIP points that will help you move up to a higher tier where you get more OmenX weekly and better prizes on the wheel. It is honestly built for a person to be able to have fun for free. But there are huge incentives to spend a little money if you want to fast track your OmenX stack.
If you want to see more about the platform and the game, check out this starter guide I made.
And here's a preview of the game that just went live that is all about having old school video game fun.
Because this involves crypto, it is very important to note that none of this is financial advice. I just like to play games. Don't go to game players for financial advice.
By the way, my Steamdeck/PlayStation analogy holds true for Gomining and OmenX. I actually like and do both. Check out my referral links if you want to get a discount when you sign up. For the first 10 people that join either one and send me a screenshot, I will send you 10 Hive.
