The bottle tells me this soured wheat beer infused with guava fruit is perfect for a summers day. Given it was 36 degrees today in Melbourne it seemed like a smart idea, sure the skies with looking a bit grey when I walked into the bottleshop but you know summer sipper seemed right, about half way home the skies opened and as some sort of tropical, possibly even biblical rain belted down, it's like Melbourne has become tropical, not that climate change is a thing or anything.
This beer is another one from New Zealand – this time Kereru Brewery which the internet tells me is based in Upper Hutt in Wellington, incidentally about 5km from where I lived between the ages of 0 and 4 years old. Small world huh? Not really the world has a circumference of about 40,000 Km. Consider that your random fact of the day.
The beer pours a little disappointing, there is a head but it disappears almost immediately, leaving you with a hazy slightly pinkish tan liquid, it sort of looks like guava juice, which let’s face it is hardly surprising
The smell has a mixture a tang and sweetness of fruit, sort of like a Queensland backyard on a summers night, with some possums on the prowl for some fruit humburglering action.
It's a reasonable beer, it has plenty of spitzy fizz, it feels like it could be some guava and champagne based cocktail, perhaps it should come with a umbrella in it?
It isn't hugely beery and I think I'd struggle to drink more than one, even if it was sunny. Which by the way it now is - friggin Melbourne this is getting silly - so now that I've almost drowned buying this beer, started drinking it in pouring rain and finished drinking it in sun I can confirm it performs in all conditions, a good enough beer but not really worth walking to the shop in the rain to buy.
