Sigiriya Rock fortress Sri Lanka the 8th wonder of the world
Sigiriya is one of the most valuable historical monuments of Sri Lanka.Referred by locals as the Eighth Wonder of the World this ancient palace and fortress complex has significant archaeological importance and attracts thousands of tourists every year. It is probably the most visited tourist destination of Sri Lanka.
Sigiriya Rock Fortress built way back in 473 AD by King Kasyapa is indeed an incomparable spectacle. It has also been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Apart from its gigantic size, Sigiriya’s wonder is in its advanced irrigation systems said to be well ahead of its time.
Engineers from around the globe are still bewildered by the existence of such advanced technology in such ancient times. The fortress is further enhanced by its beautiful water gardens, frescos of Sigiriya Damsels, the graffiti Mirror Wall and the giant paws of a lion carved into the rock at the entrance to the final ascent to the top.
The palace is located in the heart of the island between the towns of Dambulla and Habarane on a massive rocky plateau 370 meters above the sea level.
