Number 13! I have to love it!
Today is multi-card reader day
This object is of course an object that I love! As a lover of photography, it is also an object that I have owned for years. Okay, granted, not this one. No, I've worn out many of these memory card readers over the years. When I bought my first digital camera, a 5-megapixel Kodak, I didn't have a card reader. I still had to connect my camera to my PC and transfer my photos. And that was sometimes a problem, if I had drained my camera battery I had to charge it first, and only then could I transfer and view my photos. That had to change! That way I learned the importance of transferring those pictures from my card to my PC in a more efficient way! Impatient as I was, I didn't want to have to wait until my battery was full again.
It was there that my first USB multi-card reader came into play. With this little device I was able to transfer my photos as soon as I got home, and faster than if I did it via my camera. I was in love! And it became a must-have for me. I also believe that it is really a must-have for every photographer.
At first I only had a simple card reader that could only read the card I was using at the time. When I bought my first digital SLR camera I was confronted with a new phenomenon. It required a different memory card, and I could no longer use my card reader. I was again dependent on the slower solution of connecting my camera to my PC and transferring the photos that way. That only happened to me once! No way I would keep that up for long. So another card reader had to come, and that's when I bought my first multi-card reader!
Benefits of the multi-card reader
One of the main benefits of using a multi-card reader is convenience. With a multi-card reader, you can easily transfer data from multiple types of memory cards to your computer or other device without having to constantly change the card. This can save you a lot of time and effort, especially if you are someone who often uses multiple types of memory cards, like I did back then. Because even though I had bought my first digital SLR, my old faithful Kodak camera certainly remained in use for the first time. My god, that first SLR really made me doubt my abilities as a photographer. Tears with spouts I cried, frustration all over! I just didn't get it at first. But we're not talking about that now. Back to that card reader!
Another big advantage of using a USB multi-card reader is the speed. Card readers typically have faster transfer speeds than if you use a memory card directly with your computer or device, or if you have to hook the device up to the PC like me. Once I started using such a card reader, I was amazed at how much faster this actually went.
As a photographer, of course, one of the most important things to consider is the compatibility of the card reader with your memory card. There are several types of card readers available, each designed to read a specific type of memory card. For example, some card readers are designed to read SD cards, while others are designed to read microSD cards. But what I really fell in love with were the card readers that can read multiple types of memory cards, the SD of my old Kodakje back then, but also the CF that my SLR needed.
New features
In the meantime I no longer have an SLR camera that still uses the large CF cards, the card reader has also been changed many times. But now other useful functions have been added. Such as built-in USB ports, which can be useful for charging devices or connecting other peripherals.
In short, a USB multi card reader is a must-have for me, and I think for any photography enthusiast. The convenience (yes I'm lazy when it comes to that sort of thing), the speed and the compatibility for multiple cards at once make it ideal. I don't want to think about having to connect my camera to my PC again to transfer the photos that way. A card reader is an absolutely necessary tool, what if it stopped working today? Then tomorrow I would have a new one. I'm just not going to go so far as to have 10 in stock, but yes... there is certainly a spare in a corner of my closet.
