If You Want Success as an Entrepreneur You have to Look Inward for Your Motivation and Why.
Almost 20 years ago I first read the book "Rich Dad Poor Dad", by Robert Kiyosaki. It sent me down the rabbit hole of entrepreneurship. I am not going to sugar coat the pain of my journey. My path to being a business owner was riddled with pain and rejection. My family and friends simply were not on the same wavelength as me. The only person that I truly felt support from was my Mom. She never made me feel like my dreams were unattainable. Some people have tons of support from family and friends but not me.
Why You Should Not Look to Family and Friends to Motivate You.
The great majority of the people that surround us were born and raised in a system of servitude. From a very young age the school system teaches us to conform, obey and be a good employee. These traits are the opposite of what makes a strong foundation for an entrepreneur. We are inherently anti-establishment. We want to be our own boss. We want to do it on our terms and in our time frame. An entrepreneur is a Rebel that feels trapped by the rules society foists upon us.
Love Your Family and Friends but Be Careful When Sharing Your Ideas and Dreams with Them.
You could be setting yourself up for pain or even failure if you have diarrhea of the mouth. My circle of friends, family and co-workers must have thought I was nuts. All I ever wanted to talk about was business and entrepreneurship. It was my fuel, my dream and the only thing that truly made me excited about life. I was so careless with my dreams. I used to tell anyone that would listen. This led me to feel alienated. People avoided me like the plague. Co-workers hated talking to me. I would stay quiet at family functions, preferring instead to watch football.
Everyone around me pushed me to continue my education as a nurse. At year 12 of nursing I literally told myself enough is enough. Instead of dealing with all the noise around me I decided to relocate my whole life. Drastic I know, but sometimes you need to hit the reset button.
Surround Yourself with People Who Are on the Same Path of Entrepreneurship.
This may seem so simple but you would be amazed how stubborn we are as humans. We want to feel accepted and have approval by our current circles. This is not how you are going to succeed as an entrepreneur unless of course you were born into a family that is already on the path you seek. Take a moment and think about who you spend your time with. This is the single most important factor in your chances of success. Be careful of who you surround yourself with. This includes what you watch on TV (Programming), listen to or read.
For those that went to Sunday school there was a song that said, "Be careful little eyes what you see, be careful little ears what you hear". The song transcends religion. The human mind is malleable. Has your opinion ever changed concerning a subject? How did that happen? I guarantee it had something to do with something you heard or saw.
By surrounding yourself with people who live, talk and do business you create an atmosphere that will greatly increase your chances of success as an entrepreneur. If you choose to watch TV, play video games, social media, hang out on the corner or spend your time just listening to music you will not grow as an entrepreneur. Unless of course that is what your business is about. This also goes for working a job. If you are working overtime it might be time to think about taking that time and using it to build your dream instead.
