Ego [noun] the part of the mind that mediates between the conscious and the unconscious and is responsible for reality testing and a sense of personal identity.
Here is a time lapse (below) of Michael and the four of us at work together on an earlier "Id" drawing. In this "Ego" drawing series, we distilled new ideas and pursued our blank-pages individually, rather than all of us together on the same paper. As we continued this back-and-forth artistic exercise we uncovered new ideas, textures, themes and patterns to play with on paper. (For more on our collaborative drawings, click here!)
Drawing the Ego : A Single Artist - One Paper
The “Ego” is the continuation of our “Id” drawing series. Each of the four hands from the previous collaborative drawing project was given it’s own canvas to experiment within, allowing the individual to create the whole composition and explore their own ideas based on the previous collaborative drawings.
All four of us aimed uncover visual themes which were embedded in the past “Id” drawings. As a result, we completed four distinct Ego drawings that would later become a resource in discovering a new context, a new form to inhabit and an individual presence on paper.
In this drawing, Michael developed an intricate style of texture. Using just a pen, he created different scales of a family of forms that appear to be almost mechanically drawn. His repetitive motions become a meditation of texture that reveal different thresholds of ideas as you move about the drawing.
Here is “Ours Not Seen” below:
“Ours Not Seen” is a 70cm x 70cm hand drawing made with pen and ink.
The entire composition is visible above, here are a couple zoomed in detail images to give you a better sense of Michael’s pen-work...
