"In the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity."
Alber Einstein
Now that the Venezuelan crisis has grown roots and keeps being watered by local political pandemonium, global indifference, and a high-profile war, it has become evident that we are on our own and that every individual has to find a way to survive and prosper, not despite the crisis but thanks to it.
Golden opportunities present themselves to those willing to see them. Take the new cleaning products industry, for instance. Given the high prices of industrial or brand-named products, entrepreneurs have started a series of business to produce locally made bleach, liquid detergents, dishwashers, disinfectant, and other cleaning products. A brand name liquid detergent can cost 34 VED (about $7) or more, while the “home-made” product cost three Bolivars (0.6 $).
The people buy the basic ingredients or the mix in big barrels, which has created the need for plastic containers. Now we see armies of people picking up plastic containers from the streets to sell to these businesses. The get about 10 cents of a dollar for every plastic container and that makes them work hard to collect as many containers a day as possible so that they can make a significant amount.
That sounds great in a country with terrible garbage collection services, but unfortunately, they can only collect that one item that is profitable for them.
It would be great if other entrepreneurs could find ways to encourage people to recycle other materials so that garbage collection can become profitable as a private enterprise.
The people in power will do nothing to improve the current situation. They are unwilling to look at the big picture and truly embrace environmentalism as State policy.
