Cinco países que quiero conocer. | Five Countries I'd Like to Visit.
En una situación hipotética, donde el dinero no sería obstáculo, y solo tuviera que elegir, optaría por lugares remotos, poco conocidos y poco visitados. Algunos de esos lugares, lamentablemente se encuentran en zonas de conflictos bélicos o son parte de sistemas políticos que están causando considerable daño al mundo. No obstante eso, como todo latinoamericano, siento una atracción fatal por Europa. Supongo que una parte de nuestra mentalidad colonial admira los avances y la estética europea.
De Europa, solo visitaría "dos" regiones:
In a hypothetical situation, where money would not be an obstacle, and I only had to choose, I would opt for remote places, little known and rarely visited. Some of those places, unfortunately, are in conflict zones or are part of political systems that are causing considerable damage to the world. Despite that, like all Latin Americans, I feel a fatal attraction to Europe. I suppose a part of our colonial mentality admires European advances and aesthetics. From Europe, I would only visit "two" regions:
Italia | Italy
Por una razón de nostalgia intelectual, supongo. La cuna de las principales civilizaciones occidentales, la influencia de Italia, y Roma en particular, en la historia de la humanidad es innegable; también lo es mucho del mal que azota el mundo actualmente. Italia combinó lo mejor y lo peor de la humanidad. Artes, arquitectura, filosofía, ciencias, política, religión, todas conjugadas con episodios de barbarie sin precedentes.
For a reason of intellectual nostalgia, I suppose. The cradle of the main western civilizations, the influence of Italy, and Rome in particular, in the history of mankind is undeniable; so is much of the evil that plagues the world today. Italy combined the best and worst of humanity. Arts, architecture, philosophy, science, politics, religion, all combined with episodes of unprecedented barbarism.
Caminar por las ruinas de ciudades antiguas y por las revitalizadas ciudades modernas debe ser toda una experiencia, debe ser esperanzador saber que muchas ciudades italianas, especialmente Roma, fueron devastadas muchas veces, sus pobladores masacrados, su arte y cultura casi extintos, y sin embargo, se las arreglaron para renacer y perpetuarse en el tiempo.
Walking through the ruins of ancient cities and through the revitalized modern cities must be quite an experience. It must be encouraging to know that many Italian cities, especially Rome, were devastated many times, their people massacred, their art and culture almost extinct, and yet, they managed to be reborn and perpetuated themselves in time.

Más que un país en particular me gustaría algún día conocer una región del mundo cuya influencia en el resto del planeta es quizás poco valorada. Un ejemplo de transición de barbarie a civilización. Los famosos Vikingos, protagonistas de historias y legendas sangrientas son hoy ejemplo de desarrollo tecnológico, educativo y social. Noruega, Dinamarca, Finlandia, Suecia figuran cada año en los primeros lugares en los índices de desarrollo humano. Conocemos de primera mano muy poco sobre esas culturas, porque pareciera que nada sucede por allá. Nuestros noticieros raras veces reportan noticias que nos den una idea de que tantos conflictos o problemas enfrentan o cómo es su vida domestica. No sé si entre ellos se sienten afines o si hay animosidad, pero encuentro su historia y sus contribuciones admirables. Sin vikingos no habríamos tenido Normandos, sin normandos no estaríamos hablando de británicos, sin británicos no habría estadounidenses…
More than a country in particular, I would like one day to know a region of the world whose influence on the rest of the planet is perhaps little valued. An example of transition from barbarism to civilization. The famous Vikings, protagonists of stories and bloody legends are today an example of technological, educational and social development. Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden rank each year at the top of the human development indixes. We know very little about these cultures first-hand, because it seems that nothing happens there. Our newscasts rarely report news that gives us an idea of how many conflicts or problems they face or what their domestic lives are like. I do not know if between them they feel similar or if there is animosity from one country to another, but I find their history and their contributions admirable. Without Vikings we would not have had Normans, without Normans we would not be talking about British, without British there would be no Americans ...
China
China representa un enigma para mí. Admirada por muchos, odiada por muchos otros. Un país lo suficientemente grande y poblado para incluir, como Roma, todos los extremos. Desde los parajes remotos y paradisiacos hasta los más asombrosos desarrollos urbanísticos y tecnológicos; desde el capitalismo más salvaje hasta el comunismo más recalcitrante, China es difícil de entender y de asimilar en toda su extensión. Visitaría Hong Kong por su asombroso desarrollo tecnológico y porque es centro de conflictos ideológicos que pudieran producir cambios significativos en Asia.
Visitaría también para saturarme de la civilización y concluir que necesito irme a un lugar remoto y apacible.
China represents an enigma for me. Admired by many, hated by many others. A country large and populated enough to include, like Rome, all extremes. From remote and paradisiacal places to the most amazing urban and technological developments; From the wildest capitalism to the most recalcitrant communism, China is difficult to understand and assimilate in its entirety. I would visit Hong Kong for its amazing technological development and because it is the center of ideological conflicts that could produce significant changes in Asia.
I would also visit to saturate myself with civilization and conclude that I need to go to a remote and peaceful place.
Madagascar
Mi primer destino, para desestresarme de las urbes seria Madagascar. Una enorme isla remota con paisajes naturales fantásticos y una fauna que en más de 90% no existe en otras partes del mundo. En una situación hipotética, la única que me permitiría “visitar” estos lugares, tendría suficientes recursos para costear los riesgos de un paraje como este.
My first destination, to de-stress from the cities, would be Madagascar. A huge remote island with fantastic natural landscapes and a fauna that in more than 90% does not exist in other parts of the world. In a hypothetical situation, the only one that would allow me to "visit" these places, would have enough resources to pay for the risks of a place like this.
Polinesia Francesa | French Polynesia
Un archipiélago sacado de las legendas paradisiacas. Tahiti y Bora Bora entre sus islas más famosas. Un lugar ideal para olvidarse de la contaminada civilización, la sucia política, los conflictos sociales y raciales. Sería el último lugar que visitaría y ahí me quedaría a morir.
An archipelago taken from the paradisiacal legends. Tahiti and Bora Bora among its most famous islands. An ideal place to forget about polluted civilization, dirty politics, social and racial conflicts. It would be the last place I would visit and there I would happily die.
