Today on 3 Minutes 2 Talk, 1 Take & 0 Script I am talking about how poetry saved my life!
I have been lucky to find a way that I have been able to release the build up in my head. For me, it is to get it all out on paper in rhyme as the challenge couple with emptying the words from my head has saved me from many a deep depression and I even wrote a very long poetic suicide note once, but that act of doing that made me see the futility in that choice.
I started poetry writing when I was about 10 when the things that worried me most were keeping my room tidy and how much I loved my chickens.
It grew to be a mechanism that helped me cope with issues such as sexual abuse, bullying and surviving the hatred of step parents.
In later years, I have been known to pen the odd love poem, but it also helped me through some bad depressive episodes, as generally now I can identify the early signs of the spiral and I can either write a poem to stay out of the pit, or take action to stop falling - it is good to have several tools to help with, and writing poetry is just one.
I plan to do some more videos on a 'happiness tool box', so you can pick and choose the tools that work for you, because since Christmas last year I have come off antidepressants as the latest ones I had been prescribed were literally zombifying me and I was just so shattered all the time.
I came to see depression as a choice, so I start to choose happiness and I found certain things helped me keep on that path and stay in a good place.
The only thing that throws me these days is hormones when it comes to that time of the month, when I change into a she-devil, as my children will attest to. Just a little extra crabby.
But back to poetry. I guess in a way its a form of journaling. For some people, the release might be creating or listening to music, exercise, being mindful of the moment or meditation- it's about experimenting with what is your thing and what helps you.
Sometimes getting lost inside your head has benefits as you discover things about yourself that you can improve on, but dwelling can lead down a dangerous path.
Knowing your release button is important.
And one of my major ones is writing poetry.
Do you have any releases that you could share?
