Planted six Apple seeds last spring. Three of them germinated and I planted them in the ground in fall. Was hoping they would make it through winter. All three made it through five degree weather.
My wife saved a few seeds from some Granny Smith Apples she really liked so we could try to grow some.
I know I know people say when you grow apples from seed you don't get the same fruit you got it from. The last time I checked an Apple seed is going to grow an Apple tree. Even if it's not exactly the same fruit as its mother tree it should be pretty close.
I got the seed for these apple trees out of a Pink Lady Apple. Pink lady apples are red with small yellow dots and from a distance it looks pinkish. They're sweet, crisp and very juicy.
Some people believe it's a daunting task to grow fruit trees because it takes so long. There's a saying that goes- The best time to plant a fruit tree is 20 years ago the next best time is now.
Another inhibitor of people not planting fruit trees is that they think they must own land to be able to plant a fruit tree. If you are a renter don't be afraid to ask your landlord if you can plant some edible plants. The worst they can say is no. Then you just grow in a pot on dwarf rootstock. Or you could find someone that would be grateful to let you plant a food producing plant on there property.
Wasn't sure if these seeds would grow or not. But I wasn't going to find out by doing nothing.
There's an ancient Greek proverb "A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit”. Don't see why we can't apply that to food-producing trees for a more sustainable future.
