One of the ways we use chickens on the Homestead is with Chicken Tractors. Chickens are great workers. They will weed by pecking them out, till & spread mulch by scratching and fertilize with there manure. We had our breading stock of Red Ranger meat chickens working for us all winter in a 25 foot by 50 foot area.
This 25 foot by 50 foot area is where we will be starting a new Food Forest! We will be taking cuttings and seedlings for our young Food Forest and plugging them in to here. We will also be growing a lot of annuals in this spot until the perennials take over.
The first perennial we are putting in is Elderberry. I took these cuttings last year and rooted them over the winter.
These are the Red Ranger chickens and chicken tractor that worked the area over the winter. They are being moved to a new area to start a new job and enjoying the grass instead of the mulch they had been on.
Added the newest chicken tractor we built to help speed up the next job. We really like this new chicken tractor and plan on building more like it.
Also added the 8 by 8 chicken tractor to the mix. Between these 3 chicken tractors we should be able to get the ground read to plant in no time!!
We'll keep y'all up to dated on the new food forest and all the annual plants that will be planted!!
THANK YOU FOR POPPING BY!!
