A Three Sisters Garden is one of my favorite ways to stack the functions of different plants. You can grow a lot of food in a little area if you understand how to layer your plants correctly.
We planted out a few different styles of Three Sisters Garden the other day. The traditional Three Sisters Garden is corn beans and squash all grown together in the same area. These three plants grow together in symbiosis quite well. As the corn grows tall it gives the beans a trellis to grow on. The squash has big leaves which Shades the ground and helps to prevent evaporation and hold moisture in the ground
In one of the garden beds we planted the traditional corn beans and squash. In another garden bedwe planted sun flowers beans and cucumbers.
You can plant a Three Sisters Garden with different varieties of plants besides corn, beans and squash. The premise behind building a Three Sisters Garden is that you have a plant that grows tall a plant that runs along the ground and another one that can climb.
We've even added another sister to the mix before and put in carrots. Since they grow in the root layer it didn't have too much competition and did quite well. We have thought about using okra as the tall plant for the beans to climb and replacing the beans with a climbing pea. There's almost no wrong way to plant a Three Sisters Garden. As long as you keep in mind the different layers you can plug in different varieties of plants.
I hope this inspires you to try your own Three Sisters Garden. If you have tried them in the past I would love to hear about the different varieties of plants you used.
