El día del libro, oportuno para hablar de la lectura física, con la incursión de la tecnología y sus avances, ahora los libros se descargan de manera digital. Durante mis años de estudiante, leí varios, pero, no es igual hacerlo con la presión de cumplir con una asignación escolar, nada mejor que disfrutar de la lectura, leer relajado y estar inmerso en una historia que te atrapa de principio a fin, de la que quieres saber cada vez más y más. En mis recuerdos escolares, están la Ilíada, El Popol Vuh, El Principito y María de Jorge Isaac. Está ultima sí la leí fuera de las actividades escolares, solo fue mencionada por la biografía de ese autor.

Mi madre fue profesora de castellano, así que en casa había varias bibliotecas. Se pueden encontrar libros de todo tipo, hasta enciclopedias. En mis tiempos de ocio me gustaba leer cuentos, fábulas, poemas, leyendas y novelas. Escuchando hablar de Rómulo Gallegos, leí por su popularidad Doña Bárbara, aunque confieso que no fue la primera novela que leí, no recuerdo cual fue. De este mismo autor, seguí con la Trepadora, luego con Casas Muertas de Miguel Otero Silva y la Bruja, no recuerdo el autor de esta última. Me interesé en Casas Muertas porque leí un fragmento en los libros de castellano mientras buscaba un cuento. No obstante, hubo una historia que marcó mi vida, y esta fue, “Un cuento de Navidad”, de Charles Dickens. Narra la vida de Ebenezer Scrooge, un hombre avaro y nada generoso que luego de ser visitado por tres espíritus, se da cuenta que no vive la vida de la mejor manera, se arrepiente y cambia para bien.

Este libro pertenece al género narrativo, incluye varios elementos, la desigualdad de clases sociales, además de algo de suspenso con la aparición de fantasmas, incluido el socio de Scrooge, Jacob Marley. Este cuento, o mejor dicho, noveleta, como lo han llamado por no ser tan largo como una novela y tampoco tan corto para ser un cuento, lo leí en una tarde, me pareció algo largo, pero la trama me atrapó y quería saber en que terminaba todo. Me gustó mucho y desde que lo leí me di cuenta que su contenido iba más allá de solo entretener, está lleno de enseñanzas y reflexiones. Luego, pude ver la película, fue maravilloso que lo hayan llevado a la pantalla, cine y televisión.

En mis años de estudiante me gustaba el género narrativo, sin embargo, aunque sigue entre mis preferidos, incluiría el género didáctico también. No acostumbro a celebrar el día del libro, pero una manera de hacerlo sería acudiendo a una feria y comprar uno de mis favoritos o hacerle un regalo a un familiar o amigo. Si voy a una exposición de libros, me inclinaría por el stand donde haya libros relacionados con mi carrera de ingeniería, principalmente hidráulica, porque se relaciona con el cargo que estoy desempeñando actualmente en la empresa donde trabajo. Hasta ahora, no he conocido ningún autor de los libros que he leído y si pudiera conocer alguno, hubiera sido el autor de la historia que me dejó huella.

Aunque mi historia favorita fue un “Cuento de navidad”, las novelas, Casas Muertas y la Bruja me dejaron un recuerdo imborrable, en ambas historias el final fue trágico y triste con la muerte de uno de los protagonistas.

World Book Day is a good opportunity to talk about physical books; with the rise of technology and its advancements, books are now downloaded digitally. During my school years, I read quite a few, but it’s not the same when you’re under pressure to complete a school assignment. There’s nothing better than enjoying reading, reading in a relaxed state, and being immersed in a story that captivates you from beginning to end—one where you want to know more and more. Among my school memories are The Iliad, The Popol Vuh, The Little Prince, and María by Jorge Isaac. I did read the latter outside of school activities; it was only mentioned in the author’s biography.

My mother was a Spanish teacher, so we had several libraries at home. You could find all kinds of books, even encyclopedias. In my free time, I enjoyed reading stories, fables, poems, legends, and novels. When I heard about Rómulo Gallegos, I read Doña Bárbara because of its popularity, although I confess it wasn't the first novel I read; I don't remember which one it was. By the same author, I continued with La Trepadora, then Casas Muertas by Miguel Otero Silva, and La Bruja; I don't remember the author of the latter. I became interested in Casas Muertas because I read an excerpt in my Spanish textbooks while looking for a short story. However, there was one story that marked my life: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. It tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly and stingy man who, after being visited by three spirits, realizes that he isn't living life to the fullest, repents, and changes for the better.

This book belongs to the narrative genre and includes several elements, such as social inequality, as well as a certain amount of suspense with the appearance of ghosts, among them Scrooge's partner, Jacob Marley. I read this story, or rather, novella, as it's been called because it's neither as long as a novel nor as short as a short story, in one afternoon. I found it a bit long, but the plot captivated me, and I wanted to know how it ended. I enjoyed it immensely, and from the moment I read it, I realized that its content went beyond mere entertainment; it's full of lessons and reflections. Later, I was able to see the film adaptation, and it was wonderful that it was adapted for the screen, both in theaters and on television.

During my student years, I enjoyed narrative fiction, and while it remains among my favorite genres, I would also include educational books. I don't usually celebrate World Book Day, but one way to do so would be to go to a book fair and buy one of my favorites or give one as a gift to a family member or friend. If I go to a book fair, I would gravitate towards the stand with books related to my engineering degree, primarily hydraulics, because it's relevant to my current position at the company where I work. So far, I haven't met any of the authors of the books I've read, and if I could, it would be the author of the story that made a lasting impression on me.

Although my favorite story was "A Christmas Carol", the novels, Dead Houses and The Witch left an indelible mark on me; in both stories the ending was tragic and sad with the death of one of the protagonists.
