An oily rain smears your view of New Cydonia. It's late, and that means an uneasy quiet has fallen over the 27th floor of Bistol-Hearthsbane tower. You wish you could leave, or maybe even just go look out the window for a moment, but you know that would take away from your vacation time - and you're already in vacation debt.
"shit!", you mutter under your breath. You've looked up from the offensively gray carpet tiles, and when you glance back at your screen you see the prompt: "24 seconds of Vacation time logged. Time remaining with interest: -24.78." With a weary sigh and a shameful puff of your e-cigarette, you turn to your blinking screen and close the televid feed. Looks likes Megabicep defeated the Azure Witch 2-0 in the enhanced league. Figures. You never win a supercombat league bet. Your mind wonders as you attempt to work through the motions of filling in the cells of your report: report INT2300P. You have no idea what the report is for, or who reads it, but you know that if you don't start generating more of it then your deskmate Sam wouldn't have a deskmate anymore. Sam sat here the other 10 hours that you didn't, and in that time he was exactly 234% more productive than you. Exactly.
You couldn't afford to be fired. Not only would that mean exposure to the elements, not only would it mean being added to the Previously Fired Do Not Hire list that all the Megacorps share, but worst of all it meant your family would go to Sam. Sinclair Company cares about family values after all. Families values dictate that a family is leased from them in the event that an employee is found to no longer able or willing to act in a way that is proper for the head of family. Sam was currently unassigned, and already he was making comments about how Lisa looked great on your wedding day.
You wish you could just pretend you were free under the biorain and projectron sky. The ochre sky was a lovely shade of tolerable during the second spring of the year, and the rain was generated with a lovely lilac scent. You could take your last bit of savings and go to the Sinclair Founder Park. As long as you never leave, you'd never have to pay the exit fee...
SSSRRRRREEEERRRRKK! CRASH!
What the hell was that?!
