Episode 8.1: A House-trained Puppy
INT. COURTNEY AND TOM'S APARTMENT, EVENING, TOM'S ROOM
Tom is especially well-groomed. Courtney wears a dress.
COURTNEY
You ready?
TOM
I'm ready!
COURTNEY
What have you eaten?
TOM
Potato chips. I'm vege-terrible
tonight!
COURTNEY
Did you go pee?
TOM
What?
COURTNEY
In case you wanna go on a hydrant.
TOM
(like a robot)
I emptied my bladder in the human
waste receptacle.
COURTNEY
It's my date, too. I want to flirt-
to laugh at the adorable way he
twirls spaghetti- without having to
chase you across town.
TOM
Sorry. Yes.
COURTNEY
Alright. Tell me who you are
tonight. Are you human or wolf?
TOM
Tom the human!
COURTNEY
Say it again!
TOM
HUMAN!
COURTNEY
I can't hear you!
TOM
HUMAN!!!
They high-five and cheer. Tom starts to howl. Courtney
glares. He swallows his howl and turns it into a cheer.
INT. COURTNEY AND TOM'S APARTMENT, EVENING, LIVING ROOM
Jacob makes balloon flowers and guides Kayla's attempts.
JACOB
I know Courtney appreciates your
giving Tom another try. I do, too.
He's really sweet, I promise.
KAYLA
His sweetness isn't the issue...
I'm just not into dating a stoner.
JACOB
He's not a stoner, he's a were-
(Jacob stops. Looks panicked.)
He's a were- A were... A "Where'd
the time go?" kind of a guy. He's
in a were-ird... phase.
The sound of cheering-howling-cheering comes from the other
room. Courtney and Tom enter.
JACOB
(aside to Courtney)
All ready now?
Courtney nods. He gives her a balloon flower bouquet. Kayla
hands Tom a misshapen balloon flower.
TOM
Sorry about last time. I wasn't
quite myself.
KAYLA
That's okay. Sometimes things
aren't what they seem.
INT. RESTAURANT, EVENING
The couples are sitting around a table at a restaurant.
JACOB
...and that's why I consider my job
part of the medical profession.
They all say "Huh." Courtney beams. A waitress walks up.
WAITRESS
We had eggplant parmesan,
fettuccini alfredo with chicken,
Pollo Camillo, and the... "just
greens in a bowl" for you. The chef
added some croutons, because he
felt bad.
TOM
Great! Great idea. I love croutons.
They all start eating. Tom takes a few bites of the salad,
and his eyes get big. He begins wolfing it down.
KAYLA
Oh my, this is a rich sauce! Mm!
TOM
Rich! So rich! I haven't had food
this good since our last date.
He starts panting. Courtney stamps on his foot and looks at
him in alarm. Tom shakes his head as if trying to clear his
mind. Jacob tries to provide a distraction. He grabs three
dinner rolls and starts juggling.
JACOB
"Never juggle San Franciscan bread,
it's a sour-don't!"
Courtney laughs uproariously.
COURTNEY
Sourdough. Sour-don't.
KAYLA
How did you and Courtney meet?
He stops juggling. Throughout, Tom struggles with himself.
Jacob and Courtney are aware that Tom is struggling, and
that's why the story is hard to tell.
JACOB
Well, Courtney, Tom and our friends
Jesse and Samantha were friends
from college. And Sam came to- her
something's- some family member-
COURTNEY
It was her niece.
JACOB
Right. It was her niece's birthday
party, and I was clowning for it
and decided I would be her friend.
Then, when I met Tom, I was like
"Hey, BFFs?" and he was like "Why
not?" And then Courtney walked up
and was like "Me, too."
COURTNEY
Who?
JACOB
Paraphrasing. So, we were all
friends, and then out of the blue,
we were petting Tom together...-
Tom runs to the bathroom. Courtney follows.
JACOB
Tom loves having his hair brushed.
