Taiwan is a 100 miles away from the coast of south east China, an island state with with its own constitution and democratically-elected leaders as a country but China sees Taiwan's self-ruling as a breakaway province from them that can be taken as part of the China which can't be possible.
This is a reflection of what happened in 1946 where Taiwan broke out of China after World War Two after which Chinese communist wage war against nationalist government forces and the Chinese Communist party won the fight and Mao Zedong, who was the leader took control of Beijing. The defeat therefore, makes Chiang Kai-shek and the nationalist party who are also known as the Kuomintang fled to Taiwan.
China are trying to again Taiwan to itself because the knew Kuomintang, one the of Taiwan's most prominent political parties who ruled Taiwan island for some significant tears.
Though very few knows Taiwan as a sovereign State, because has before China through their exerts diplomatic places pressure on other countries in order not to recognise Taiwan as one of such sovereign state. China has worst relationship with Taiwan for over forty years now. China in other hand, has beginning some strategy to bring about reunification by non-military means through strengthening economic ties. The good news is that, United States of America had a long-standing policy of strategic ambiguity with Taiwan incase Chinese want to attack Taiwan. It interest you to know that US government doesn't have any official diplomatic ties with Taiwan, they only sells weapons due to it's part of Taiwan Relations Act, which gives US an access and freedom under a "Must condition" to provide the Taiwan island with the means to defend territories. The US president, Joe Biden when answering answering questions on Taiwan defense in Tokyo during a press conference with Japanese PM Fumio Kishida compared to China-Taiwan situation to Russia's invasion of Ukraine due to lack of sustainable sanctions on Russia which became a signal China.

US had declared their the intention before now to protect and defend Taiwan right from March, when Joe Biden said something very similar when he said "Vladmir Putin cannot stay in power", forcing US officials to swiftly deny America was calling for regime change in Moscow. But when asked about it later, Mr Biden did not back down. He was, he said, expressing his "moral outrage" at what Putin was doing. Again he said,
I won't let that happen to Taiwan". The official position of the US government on Taiwan is "strategic ambiguity" - the US doesn't commit to defend Taiwan, but it doesn't say it wouldn't either. This is supposed to keep China guessing.
