A company called "Ehang" is starting trial flights in Nevada for their autonomous passenger drone, the "Ehang184." Normally I'm one to wish spite upon sensationalist claims or clickbait, but this news really threw me off. This one is actually real.
Now this group certainly isn't the first to attempt to create a short-range small occupancy flight vehicle. What really bridges the gap between a Cesna or a Helicopter with an actual "flying car?" Would a Quadrotor-Drone truly be a "Flying car?"
I think that's the wrong question to ask. WHO CARES what it's called? Put down your dictionary and imagine yourself stepping into one of these things and bypassing all the traffic underneath you.
Other groups do have similiar concepts. The company Terrafugia has a model vehicle called the TF-1, or the TF-X, but it's considerably bulkier and I'm sure that the engine repair costs for those VTOLs isn't going to be very pretty.
Whomever creates the first truly successful flying car is going to need to think like Henry Ford. They need to understand economies of scale, average consumer power, and low-cost engineering. Since standard variety Quadcopters tend to be stable, reliable and very cheap to produce, I think it's the design that is going to win out. Let me know if you think otherwise!
