All of us know that smoking kills. Around the world 1 billion people smoke and 5 million people die each year from tobacco related illnesses. Smoking also harms people around the smoker. But we don't know the impact of smoking on environment. Smoking cigarette causes pollution in many environmental area.
Pollution due to cigarette is at many level. Let's see how it is killing our earth.
Growing Tobacco
Smoky end-product is not the story of pollution. Tobacco must be grown, and this puts serious hit on environment. Since tobacco is an exceptionally fragile plant, it needs huge amount of pesticides and herbicides for growth. Many of the pesticides and herbicides used in growing tobacco can discharge into ground water. This can poison the water supply and killed the wildlife. In the undeveloped nation tobacco is produced untill land become useless.
For the fertile land farmer cut the forest. This also have impact on environment.
Manufacturing and Transport
Manufacturing of any product cause pollution and cigarette manufacturing also. Cigarette manufacturing creates tons of chemical waste each year. The act of manufacturing cigarette produce chemical such as ammonia, ethylene glycol, hydrochloric acid, hydrogen fluoride, methyl ethyl ketone, nicotine and nicotine salts, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, sulphuric acid, and toluene. These chemicals are very harmful for health. Smoking causes these pollution. No consumer of cigarettes, there would be no manufacturing.
Transportation is the backbone of any manufacturing industry. For the transportation usually trucks are used. Truck use fossile fuel which is a major cause of pollution. So lit a cigarette and this result CO2 in environment.
Consumption
Smoking cigarette produce carcinogens and many other toxin that they contain. As usually we know cigarettes contains about 600 chemicals, 69 of which causes cancer, some may not realise that one cigarette release about 7000 chemicals. Chemicals found in cigarette are highly soluble in water which results in water pollution. Drinking such water are harmful for the human and animal organs. So smoking is harmful in many way.
Cigarette Butts
There are 4.5 trillion filtered cigarettes smoked around the world every year. All the butts of cigarettes are remaining somewhere all around the world. Butts are technically considered biodegradable but they are not. Butts are formed by cellulose acetate. This material can breakdown into very small pieces but never biodegrade. Cigarette butts are toxic waste which pollute the water. Animal consume these butts but these butts make them sick or kill.
So we can see that cigarette is solely responsible pollution and many type of disease. So move forward one step and just quit the smoking and make the world clean and healthy.
