Augmented reality is a live view of an environment that is modified and controlled by a computer. Augmented reality is quite different from virtual reality. Augmented reality enhances the perception of reality, while virtual reality involves a simulated environment. I will speak more on virtual reality later.
Augmented reality was originally intended for use in the entertainment industry, especially for use in games but eventually, more and more people began to realize that it could also be useful in other areas. It could be used in the business world, in education and also to easily share acquired knowledge.
Technological components of the AR system
Hardware
The major hardware necessary for AR system operation are the processor, input devices, sensors and display. Most modern technological gadgets have these, so, they are suitable as AR platforms.
Display
Head mounted displays are most often used. This allows for ease in accessing and using the augmented reality platform. The displays are usually in form of a helmet and this makes it easier for them to be fixed on the head.
Augmented reality glasses
They can also have displays in form of eyeglasses. The perception of reality is altered and manipulated by the viewer, through the use of the glasses.
Input devices
These are the devices used to relay the information that needs to be processed to the augmented reality platform. It could be either speech recognition or gesture recognition systems.
Uses of Augmented Reality
1. It could be used in architecture to make models for buildings and roads. It could also help in the resolution of construction problems and it would give a clear idea of what to expect from the end result.
2. It could be used in art work and it would bring another dimension into painting and drawing.
3. It could help with the projection of graphs and show statistics in the business world. It could also help with the monitoring of market interests.
4. It would help in enhancing education by making it more interactive. The students are no longer passive learners but are actually involved in the learning process advance whole.
5. It helps with flight training. It aids people in learning how to fly air vehicles without the worry of hurting others or hurting themselves. The plane remains stationery but the augmented reality gives the pilot the impression that the plane has already taken off.
Possible disadvantages
It is very easy for individuals to access private information. The use of augmented reality in public domains might lead to breach of privacy.
All in all, it might not seem like much now, but I am certain that in a few years, we will find many more uses for augmented reality. Augmented reality platforms have the chance to evolve beyond the dreams of anybody.
