There is a case going on currently in Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria. The ex-VC of Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Anthony Elujoba, was remanded in Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday, 6th of July for alleged fraud of N1.4 Billion.
The students and staff of Obafemi Awolowo University have rallied behind the ex-VC, Professor Anthony Elujoba. He brought peace into OAU during his short term in office. The University had been in a state of unrest, with rampant strikes and protests. The four year term of his predecessor, Professor Bamitale Omole, had wreaked havoc on the school with the unpaid salaries of staff, mismanagement of funds, frequent strikes by students and staff (both teaching and non-teaching) and protests. He is not a well liked figure and people rejoiced when he was asked to leave.
Prof. Omole was brought in for several reviews and investigations about corruption claims but nothing stuck. This led to the problems within the school and when he chose a successor, Professor T. Salami, he was rejected and barred from entering his office. Prof. Salami was aggressively chased out of the school and the VC's lodge and prevented from resuming office.
Professor Elujoba was finally appointed after much trouble within the school. He kept the peace, paid salaries and listened to the complaints of people.
The OAU staff and students have been pushing for years for the arrest of Omole for embezzlement and misappropriation of funds but somehow he has always slithered through. Prof. Elujoba should not be punished for the actions of others and for doing the right thing.
Have we sunk so low as a country that doing your job the right way without bribery or stealing is now a crime? Food for thought.
Stay Blessed.
