There is so much to explore in the kitchen when one is in the mood. At any point culinary is about the exploration of flavors and colors that satisfy our palates. Whether it's fancy or simply homemade, eating food we like is our all-time favorite. Cooking for me is a matter of success and failure. Well, most of my cooking is experimental. Regardless of the result, they are still edible anyway.
Since I am not in my home kitchen and on a tight budget when it comes to marketing, I used to consider recooking leftovers and using ingredients on hand without spending too much money in the market. For today's recipe, three simple ingredients made an amazing vegan food that satisfied my taste buds.
Let's start cooking Spinach-Chestnut Vegan Dumplings.
Having food intolerances, it's often hard for me to decide what to cook that will avoid triggering my IBS. It's such a pain when I have the money, but I limit myself to eating what I want. So food experimentation is my way of discovering new flavors that could satisfy my palate without craving the forbidden ones.
When I had a handful of spinach, some chestnuts, and the remaining dumpling wrappers from the previous cooking, one thing that came to mind was to make vegan dumplings. Since I often fail in my cooking, I had a cooking test yesterday, and it turned out great, so I proceeded to today's cooking for another cooking blog.
The same is true with simple ingredients; preparation is a piece of cake. With these simple ingredients, one could make healthier dumplings that are best for vegans. Spinach and chestnut are some of my favorite vegan foods because these two are good for my digestion. For those who want to knead dumpling wrappers, additional time is necessary. Gladly, I found ready-to-use wrappers on the market, which come in handy.
Now get your hands ready to create a simple yet tasty vegan recipe!
First, finely chop the spinach leaves (discard the stem), followed by the chestnuts. Alternatively, you can use carrots, corn, cabbage, spring onions, mushrooms, and other vegetables of your preference. But these two are easier to cook. Season the mixture with salt and pepper. Since I didn't use eggs because it's a vegan recipe, I used canola-olive oil to combine the vegan mixture.
Afterward, my hand excitedly scooped a sizeable amount of vegan fillings and wrapped them with dumpling wrappers. It was my first time making dumplings, and I truly enjoyed this process. I used a small amount of water to seal each dumpling, and I pressed the edges using my little fingers. There is no tutorial necessary here, but it is a matter of sentido common.
It may look hard for those who haven't tried, but making dumplings is just an easy thing.
They're all wrapped and ready to be fried! My stomach couldn't wait to taste them.
Some deep-fry dumplings to cook the fillings well and make the skin crispy. But there's a technique for cooking dumplings without using too much oil. In a non-stick pan, pour in enough oil, then fry the dumplings until golden brown. The fire should be low, so dumplings won't get burned.
Once one side turns golden brown, flip the dumplings onto the other side and pour a small amount of water. Cover until the water reduces. This method will help cook the fillings faster. Once the water reduces, continue frying until both sides are crispy. Using this method, the dumplings will have soft fillings and a crispy texture on the outside.
And just like that, I made healthy vegan dumplings. Another secret to yummy dumplings is the sauce. Some use sweet soy sauce, and some use chili sauce. Since I'm not a fan of soy sauce, I used a sweet chili sauce mixed with some ketchup. It was perfect!
And look at that! Well-cooked spinach-chestnut vegan dumplings. It's soft on the inside and crispy on the outside.
But if you want to get even brown-colored dumplings with a crispier texture, you can deep fry them. For a healthier, zero-oil, and easier method, you can steam dumplings.
This one is perfect for me. The sweet chili-ketchup sauce made this recipe yummier! This is a must-try vegan recipe.
Now it's your time to make vegan dumplings. I hope you liked this recipe. I still have some dumpling wrappers, frozen in the fridge for later use. I might make sweet dumplings next time ☺️.
