Have you ever noticed someone that just doesn't seem to care how they look or feel? What causes this absolute lack of caring for one's self? Does it have something to do with self esteem or is it just downright laziness?
I'm sure you've stood next to someone at the shoe store or any place of business that doesn't appear to have brushed their hair or color coordinated their clothing. Both their shirt and pants are incredibly wrinkled and their hair is a disheveled and greasy.
Perhaps you know someone who lives in a dirty squalor because they decided just to never clean the place?
Have you ever wondered why?
I used to work with a fellow named Chris.
He was a happy guy and quite well read. We would often discuss the latest book that we were both reading.
His girlfriend was quite the looker too and I mentioned on a few occasions how pretty she was.
One day when my car broke down he offered to take me to school after work. When I opened the passenger side door I couldn't help but notice how sticky the handle was.
The funny part was that about a hundred soda cans fell out. Just sitting in the passenger seat meant you were literally sitting in a trash can full of soda cans and fast food trash.
He told me as fast as he cleaned it then it would immediately fill back up.
I found this mildly hard to believe.
So why did I write this post about it today?
Well I just got back from the grocery store.
I was standing in line behind a rather large gentleman who was drinking from a big two liter bottle of Coca Cola and holding an open bag of grapes in his hand.
After he paid for his groceries he wiped his hand on the counter and a huge sticky purple smear appeared. He ignored it and walked outside with his groceries.
I paid for my groceries and was shortly outside as well.
On the way to my car he drove by in front of me.
He was driving a newer model BMW that was absolutely caked with dirt. It was bouncing up and down which made me think that the shocks were out.
He had both the driver and passenger side windows down which made me wonder on an extremely hot day like today if the air conditioning was broken.
In his left hand was the Coca Cola which he was drinking from as he drove. During the moment that I watched him he managed to spill Coke on himself twice and it dripped all down his shirt. As he passed in front of me several pieces of paper flew out the back side window.
How could he let such a nice car get in such bad shape?
How could he feel that it's normal to open a two liter Coke and eat that and a bag of grapes while standing in line then wipe his sticky hand on the counter leaving a sticky smear for the next person to deal with?
Apathy?
Selfishness?
Are these self esteem issues?
Sometimes I think that there's just something wrong with the world lately.
Perhaps he was never even taught how to take care of himself correctly.
What makes a person decide not to take care of themselves?
Do you know?
I hope you liked this one.
