It's really hot where I live now in Luang Prabang, Laos 🇱🇦. It's so hot that my transformer caught fire and exploded. I hated my time in the US Navy ⚓, but one thing I took away from it was how to put out fires🔥. I think one of the first things you should know in a foreign country is how to say,
🧯Get a fire extinguisher🧯!
We put the fire out, but now we don't have any electricity or internet so I looked through my list of ROM files on my phone and went with the original 8-bit The Legend of Zelda. It's one of the few games from that system that have aged well and are still fun to play today. How many NES games can you put in that list? Well, I downloaded every NES ROM and deleted most of them except for the Mario games, Contra, Tetris, Pac-Man, Arkanoid, Dr. Mario, Excitebike, Tecmo Bowl, Ninja Gaiden, Kung Fu, the Adventure Island games, and of course Zelda, but I'm picky and a delete freak. What about you? Which old-school Nintendo games are on your list?
Is The Legend of Zelda only fun today because of the nostalgia? Do you think if some kids today got stranded in a cabin with only this game in a Nintendo Entertainment System they would enjoy playing it?
There were many RPG games that tried to compete with this legend, but they sucked and I forgot about them completely. I don't even remember any good RPG games from the Super Nintendo days, but I only liked the Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat games back then so maybe some slipped by my eye. I know many people swear by the Zelda game on the SNES, but that one never made it into my console. Maybe I'll try that one next, but I only seem to play these retro games whenever I'm without the internet which is a rare occasion these days.
The soundtrack and sound effects from this game are permanently embedded in my memory. How did they do such a good job with the limited technology they had back then? The game is only 8 KB. That's eight kilobytes with a K, not, megabytes. The GIF image I created for this post is thousands of times larger at 3.8 MB. How the hell did that happen? Can you hear the theme music in your mind? Why can't we embed audio into our Hive posts like in the MySpace days? Do any of you remember Tom and MySpace? I never understood why everyone dropped it for Facebook in the early 2000s. Why did that happen? Are people really sheeple 🐑🐏 who all love being the same and being told what to do?
I can't remember what my friend did to me to make me so mad back in the 5th grade, but I do remember going full nuclear on his ass when I got my revenge by deleting all three of his The Legend of Zelda save states. I also remember the shiny golden cartridge, some of our parents liking the game, and the large folded-up map of the world. What about you? What are some of your The Legend of Zelda gaming memories?
