Every week there is a Splinterlands challenge to share a rule set using a specific card and on this week's post it is a battle with the back to the basics rule set. I also encourage Splinterlands players to partake in the challenge because you get to try different strategies and earn some crypto in the process.
Rule set, Battle and Plan
The ruleset this time is back to basics and up to eleven. This means that all monsters lose their abilities and all monsters get the amplify ability. The amplify ability is useless unless someone uses a summoner with those effects so I am not as worried about that. There is also 19 mana available and I am left with the choice of any splinter except for life.
The summoner I choose to use this time is Thaddius Brood. In a match like this, the -1 health will make the fight easier in my direction and the -1 magic will also help because I see magic or ranged monsters used more often due to this back to the basics. It will also allow me to use my cards to it's highest level and give me an advantage.
| Splinter | Mana Cost | Position | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thaddius Brood | 4 | Summoner | -1 magic and health |
| Giant Scorpion | 4 | 1st | Tank |
| Corpse Fiend | 0 | 2nd | Filler monster |
| Dark Ferryman | 3 | 3rd | range and backup tank |
| Soul Strangler | 3 | 4th | Damage dealer |
| Soulstorm | 5 | 5th | Damage dealer |
| Total Mana: | 19 |
My plan is just to have a lineup using a tank up front with some armor. If my opponent does use ranged monster, at least the shield will help and give me some buffer. Then I followed up with a filler monster and a backup ranged tank monster. My final two cards are my damage dealers in this fight with 3 ranged attack each.
Round 1
At the first glance of my opponent's lineup, I think I have the stronger lineup due my ranged monsters dealing more damage than my opponent. On top of that, my summoner counters the extra magic damage that my opponent gets.
Round 2
I killed off one monster on my opponent's side even though I missed an attack. Either way, I am at an advantage because I haven't lost any monsters just yet. I also have a fast ranged monster so I don't think he will miss that often against the current tank.
I did not miss any attacks so I was able to take out my opponent before he could kill any cards on my side.
Conclusion
The battle this time around went exactly as I expected. I was expecting my opponent to use magic monsters and he did. While my cards up front were stalling, my damage dealers went in and destroyed my opponent. Through this, I was able to win this fight in a quick and fast fight.
The -1 magic and -1 health were both useful in this fight as it made my opponent weaker and I was able to kill him faster. The only issue I saw as a potential problem was the fast magic monster on my opponent's side but I only missed once. Besides that, I felt that my opponent wasn't considering a counter to magic.
You can see my entire match here.
What did you think of my match? Was there anything you would have done differently? I think it is quite interesting to see how different players use the same card.
