It was announced by MLB (Major League Baseball) that they will remove the Chief Wahoo logo from all Cleveland Indians uniforms starting in 2019. They will still be able to play with the logo for 2018, the de facto last year of the logo.
The reason this has come into the spotlight is that for many years, many Native American tribes have complained that the logo is demeaning to their people. There have been protests that did not produce much fruitful legislation. However, MLB decided it was the right time to do so.
The Cleveland Indians are not the only professional sports team that has had to deal with this controversy.
The NFL's Washington Redskins have also come under similar fire due to their namesake. However, the fight here has become even more hostile. It was taken to the courts to have the name removed and/or changed. The team won their case, though, giving them the right to retain the name. The team's owner, Dan Snyder, said he would never change it. He has stated that too many people hold a sentimental value to the name and that it would hurt his team in the long run. You can believe that however you may.
Personally, I think it is a good thing when teams change their name if it holds a derogatory connotation. If it hurts a sect of people, there is no reason not to change it.
I do, however, hope that something like this doesn't open the floodgate to stupid requests. For example, if a random fan was mauled by a bear as a kid, so they request the Chicago Bears change their team name due to painful memories from a bear attack. That would be asinine and a waste of time. I do believe the courts and major league sports are smart enough to fend off those types of requests.
