Eastern Nicator (Nicator gluaris)
First time seeing this little one... ever, I had to rely on a forum to identify this shy small bird, still so young identified by pronounced hook at the end of the beak. Full grown 23cm weighing around 70g, although not in adult dress must be close to full size already.
By allowing the garden to go wild along precast walls (to hide ugly uniform walls), the small birds have made new homes. Hearing calls but not seeing the birds sometimes helps when researching which I did in this case, yes the call Sound Capture Peter Boesman early morning as the sun rises most distinctive.
Untidy nests normally found surprisingly close to the ground, in my Natal plum (Carissa macrocarpa) with thorns they have an ideal nesting spot next to the wall.
Insect eaters, taking the odd small lizards of which there are plenty around, I would be exceptionally happy when I see the adult, or this little one in full plumage.
Photography captured on 24th January 2021 in my garden, I think this fledgling did not realize it was out in the open, hanging onto the branch during a strong wind, quite happy for a photographic session allowing me within two meters from he/she was perched.
The nicators are a genus, Nicator, and family, Nicatoridae, of songbirds endemic to Africa. The genus and family contain three species.
