White eared barbet In My Garden
White-eared barbet (Afrikaans, die witoorhoutkapper) occurs in a band from Tanzania and Kenya to Mozambique and KwaZulu-Natal, generally preferring moist woodland. Further-est south where these delightful little birds are seen is Amanzimtoti where I live.
Conditions for these little birds is ideal, with many trees offering holes as nests, with patches of wooded land well for the moment, if development stops ripping everything out, suburban life most folk have large trees on the property to attract nature into the garden and shade in the hot summers.
Whilst typing away on my keyboard I heard this high pitched ‘kreep, kreep, kreep – krip, krip, krip’, immediately thought that is not a call I normally hear in the garden, camera in hand took a quiet walk around, up in the tree these to White earned barbet were in full song, well more like rap-artists!
White Eared Barbet
End of day, enjoying the last of the sun at the top of a tree sparse of leaves, serenading song ringing through the garden here is the little bird vocalizing in a voice I have not heard before. Perhaps the white-eared barbets have found somewhere to roost close at hand, it is the start of the breeding season October to January.
Normally seen in couples, they roost communally in groups of approximately ten in the holes of old/dead trees. Fast straight flight at speed hawking moths, also enjoy eating insects and fruit, both our large trees in the front garden offer berries at this time of year which when ripened will attract insects.
Thought for today: Two birds disputed about a kernel, when a third swooped down and carried it off. ~ African Proverb
