Today my good friend posed a question to his Facebook page, questioning why people get so wrapped up in metaphysics.
This was his question:
"Interesting thing. A lot of people are devoutly religious...fanatical even. I rarely even think about the possibility religion or God, though. It has no bearing on my life. I push forward with personal hope and optimism, and never feel the need to “pray” to anything or “worship” anything. This makes me wonder how people can be so caught up in metaphysics, or caught up in terms of pushing against religion. I just think there are way more pressing concerns than needing to rile up my imagination all the time. It just seems like a gigantic waste of energy and time."
Although I do not subscribe to any specific organized religion, I like to think that I subscribe to all of them, taking the bits and pieces that I like from each and leaving the rest.
This was the response I left in the comments:
I have fun philosophizing about what could be, what could possibly lie beyond the five senses and I do think it has positive real-life consequences as well. When you explain the unexplainable things in life with magic an mysticism, life becomes so much more fun, and sometimes it can give you the confidence that you need to go through with certain decisions...it can make the world seem like a puzzle that is fun to explore
In the first book that me and Derrick wrote we called this perspective "explorative agnosticism"
The difference between this path, and one of extreme religiosity is the idea that we separate mystic beliefs from the five sense world, and put them in a category of unproven theories. When approached from this angle, beliefs become less dogmatic, and it is much easier to talk with other people who have different ideas without getting into arguments. My life has taken a very positive direction since I've adopted this mindset, most of this is all internal mentally, because i feel better about the world and make better decisions, but i feel this is somewhat of a different mindset than someone who is purely religious in the dogmatic sense.
For those of you who are interested in checking out the "explorative agnosticism" chapter in my book, you can read the FREE PDF, the information relating to this is in chapter 2. Find out more about Reflections on Anarchy and Spirituality HERE.
