"Just Doin Mah Job"
I have noticed this strange trend where people have these strange attachments to specific jobs, as if there is ONE job out there for them, and they can't seem to conceive ever finding another job.
I find this especially true in jobs that some people consider to be unethical, such as cops, government agents or jobs that harm the environment. "it creates jobs" or "im just doing my job" is not a valid excuse to violate people's rights or trash the environment, but it seems to be an acceptable excuse in our society.
I notice the same mentality in friends who are unhappy with their jobs for various reasons...
People always talk about the difficult job market and the lack of opportunities, and this is true to some extent, but most of these limitations are in people's own heads, because they are afraid of taking a leap of faith and would rather settle for something that is comfortable, but also is either unethical or just makes them miserable.
I've been an author, rave promoter, truck driver, mortician, food server, tech support, and never stayed at a job I didn't like or that I felt was unethical (i quit the funeral industry for this reason)
Jobs are out there and it is possible to start your own business (despite massive regulations which do make it harder)
The economy is bad, and that does make it more difficult, it does create more obstacles, but some of the biggest obstacles we face are the limitations of our own mind.
