I still can not believe that researchers at the University of Washington have created a cellphone that works without battery. And I will quote the article where I read about it. They express very well in a sentence one of the meanings of this new invention.

The phone instead of using battery grasps the energy to be able to function of radio signals or the light. The research team even made Skype calls.
One of the keys to achieving this was to think about how a telephone was designed and to review all processes that consume a lot of energy, such as the conversion of analog signals that transmit the sound in digital data that a phone can understand. According to them is one of the processes that consumes the most energy making the use of batteries mandatory.
