Many people experience depression and anxiety and suffer silently from them every day. I was quite tired emotionally and mentally at some point in my life. I was happy, but frightened, irritated. At times I couldn't even describe my pain. However, with the help of God's Word, prayer and faith, I started to get a grasp that God does not want us to live in darkness for eternity.
We are assured in the Bible that we can throw our worries on God and He cares for us. In 1 Peter 5:7, it states that we should, “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” This verse takes me the strain because I know I don't have to do everything by myself. Whenever I feel anxious, I attempt to pray with sincerity and not retain it within myself.
Another way of biblically overcoming depression is to read the word of God every day. Sometimes it is the sadness which makes us feel inadequate or unloved, but God's promises bring hope. The Lord is near to those who are of a broken heart (Psalm 34:18). This is a reminder to God that He is not far from those in distress. When things get tough, I know this and it gives me strength.
I also learned that my association with Godly people helps a lot. A troubled heart may be healed gradually by encouragement from the brethren, worship and fellowship. Anxiety may get worse when we isolate ourselves, but when we share our burdens with trusted believers, it's a time of peace and comfort.
Philippians 4:6-7 also reminds us to pray about everything, rather than being anxious about anything. I think the real peace is in trusting God no matter how difficult life is. While it may not be a cure all, healing is possible with prayer, faith, patience and the word of God with regard to depression and anxiety. Joy, peace and hope are restored again by God.
