Mortality is a universal experience of all human beings. I have wondered on many occasions why people die. It's heart-wrenching when you have to ask it, particularly when you're losing someone you love. Sometimes death comes suddenly and the grief it leaves is too much to bear. But I am learning through the word of God that death was not God's purpose for man.
In the Bible it is written that Sin came through one man, and death through sin (Romans 5:12). Sin entered the world into Adam and Eve's life when they disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden, and death entered into the world in mankind's life. This means that man's separation from God, the source of life, is the cause of death. Unfortunately, due to sin, all people are required to die at some time in their lives.
But I am also comforted by the promises of God! For those who believe in Him, death is not the end. Jesus said in John 11:25, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.” This verse is an encouragement to me because I know that God has a plan for eternity for those who are faithful to Him. I know God cares for us, and has the ability to understand our suffering and pain, even when I'm afraid or heartbroken.
Death sometimes teaches us to appreciate life and to get closer to God. Teach us to number our days, for we are wise in our own eyes, says Psalm 90:12. This scripture is a reminder to me to live a life of love and kindness and obey God every day.
So, in summary, people die due to sin having entered the world, but through Jesus Christ, there is a hope beyond death. Death may cause tears and sorrow but God's promises bring us peace of heart. In my mind, God will take away pain and death – “There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” (Revelation 21:4).
