MicroFiction: A 250 word story format that I often utilize to address the daily prompts. The story today is written using the word prompt "weak bond".
...When describing something viewed as weak, individuals tend to visualize a person or object as being unstable or unsteady. Often people point toward a person's personality or inability to get the job done. More often, the word refers to something that should be considered having strength but doesn't. The word can also refer to a situation that's fundamentally not sound on its own merits. I share a short story alone those lines.
For my theme, I was inspired by and utilized the 
Below is my story:
It hit them the moment they rounded the corner. Rotten meat mixed with feces. The men bent down to check the victims. Two deceased. One, human; another; animal. The pair lay close, one protecting the other, met their demise simultaneously. No accident occurred here was their conclusion. Vengeance was the suspected motive.
The taller man, Detective Harrison, motioned to secure the crime scene. Yellow ribbon was seen by no less than twenty bystanders, mostly residents of the alley bordering 10th and Carmine.
No name; address; or owner was found on both victims. What was it then the canine's relationship to the man? A weak bond perhaps, but a connection nonetheless. Harrison glanced down the alley toward a light streaming from a vagrant building.
Night approached. Sirens screamed nearby. A busy one ahead," Harrison joked after noticing a tall dude retreat and flee. "Geez, a runner. Your turn, Anderson. I'll guard the victims. Much easier on the knees."
Anderson reacted quickly and returned just as fast. "Guess, the sirens spooked him searching for a another suspect. Don't think he had any clue what happened here."
Indeed, a typical, busy Saturday night for that part of town. All that gaped at the double murder were useless, shaking their heads in the negative when questioned. But to harm a canine who was probably protecting, if not its owner, someone familiar both detectives concluded, caused them to add cruelty to their description of the murder scene.
At the precinct, reports filed, they clocked out.
