Today's quote is...
Step out of the history that is holding you back. Step into the new story you are willing to create.
-Oprah Winfrey
Welcome back to Mid-Day Motivation with @JustLibby! Every day I provide thought-provoking quotes by some of the world's most influential men and women!
The author of today's quote probably doesn't need an introduction, however, Oprah's life story is so fascinating I can't keep it to myself.
Oprah was born into poverty in rural Mississippi to a teenage single mother. After her birth, her mother traveled north and Oprah spent her early childhood living with her loving maternal grandmother, who was so poor that Oprah was dressed in potato sacks for clothing.
At six, she moved back with her mother and was raised in an inner-city Milwaukee neighborhood. When her mother gave birth to another child, Oprah was temporarily shipped off to live with her biological father in Tennessee. She later moved back to her mother to Milwaukee where she endured years of abuse, poverty, and molestation by family members and a friend of the family. As a teenager, she gave birth to a boy who died in infancy.
Even though she had turbulent times as a child and teenager, Oprah's gifts paved a brighter future for her. With her talents in speaking and her academic focus in high school, she won a full scholarship to Tennessee State University where she studied communication.
After working at a local radio station and co-anchoring the nightly news on television, Oprah relocated to Chicago and began hosting a low rated morning talk show. Within a few months, she turned the poorly watched show to the highest rated segment in Chicago. The show was renamed to The Oprah Winfrey Show and expanded to an hour-long program.
This is the beginning of how she became the most watched and wealthiest African Americans of all time. As a multi-billionaire media mogul, talk show host, actress, and producer, Oprah is a far-reaching philanthropist who has given away hundreds of millions of dollars.
It's clear that the hardships of Oprah's past didn't dictate her future. When she says "step out of the history that is holding you back. Step into the new story you are willing to create" she means it as a person who has experienced the darkest times and the most rewarding moments life has to offer.
Can you let your history be the past and look forward to the future you can create for yourself?
