Romania's national postal service, Poșta Română, has installed its first Bitcoin ATM at a branch in Tulcea as part of a pilot program in partnership with Bitcoin Romania (BTR Exchange), the country's leading cryptocurrency exchange.
This terminal allows users to deposit cash directly to fund their accounts on the Bitcoin Romania platform. The postal service plans to expand the initiative by installing four additional Bitcoin ATMs in Alexandria, Piatra Neamț, Botoșani, and Nădlac.
This move is part of a broader modernization effort by Poșta Română to integrate digital technologies into its infrastructure and expand services, especially in less digitized areas of Romania.
The initiative reflects growing acceptance of cryptocurrencies by public institutions and aims to lower entry barriers for crypto adoption among the Romanian population, which already includes over 600,000 crypto investors.
Romania's postal company has previously engaged with digital assets, having issued the country's first official NFT in 2022.
The installation of Bitcoin ATMs in postal offices aligns with a wider European trend of increasing cryptocurrency infrastructure, despite global challenges in the crypto market. This effort by Poșta Română is seen as a significant step in bringing innovation closer to citizens and supporting the digital transformation of traditional services.
