This must be some kind of snake cactus! I was looking around for a cup of coffee in my friend’s office yesterday.
And this crazy cactus was what I saw by the window in the coffee room. At first I thought it was a joke or a fake plant. But it seemed the owner tried to save this funny cactus by putting a tin for supporting it. I could imagine this plant crawling around the room with string drangling from the ceiling to support the long stem in the future.
Thursday turned out to be a cactus day for me as I seemed to be running into cactus again in the afternoon. I have noticed that more Thai people are beginning to be interested in cactus. The need for some ice-cream have led me to the nearby organic and whole food shop. They almost ran out their home made ice-cream, so I had to try the two last flavours of jack-fruit and coffee! These turned out to be a perfect combination for my hazy mind.
The flood in Nongkhai has killed off most of my gardener’s plants and my newly planted trees which supposed to become a forest in three years’ time. So, I bought several kinds of seeds for my gardener, as we would have no fresh vegetables left very soon. We need to start planting new seeds in plots and dry area.
The good thing about the seeds from this shop is that these seeds were not genetically engineered like most seeds in other shops. These are naturally cultured and selected seeds for healthy yields and germination in the future.
เมื่อวานนี้เราบังเอิญเจอต้นกระบองเพชรที่แปลกประหลาดมาก คิดว่าคงเป็นกระบองเพชรงู เพราะมันเลื้อยไปได้ยาวมาก เรากำลังหากาแฟดื่มสักหนึ่งถ้วยในห้องกาแฟในที่ทำงานของเพื่อน เรามองดูวิวที่หน้าต่าง ก็เจอต้นประหลาดที่ตลกมาก เจ้าของคงพยายามดูแลมัน จึงปล่อยให้มันโตไปเรื่อย จนต้องเอากระป๋องใบชามารองให้มัน แทนที่จะปล่อยให้มันเลื้อยไปตามยะถากรรม
วันนี้เป็นวันที่เจอแต่กระปองเพชรตามหน้าต่าง ตอนบ่ายเราไปหาไอศรีมอร่อยๆกิน ที่ร้านของโครงการหลวง เขาเหลืออยู่แค่สองอย่าง คือไอศรีมขนุนและกาแฟ เราก็ต้องลองทั้งสองอย่าง รสชาดแปลกแต่ไปด้วยกันได้ เผื่อจะได้หายง่วงบ้าง ตอนจ่ายเงินก็เจอต้นกระบองเพชรที่ขอบหน้าต่างอีกแล้ว มีอยู่สามต้นด้วยกัน สงสัยตอนนี้ต้นกระบองเพชรกำลังเป็น แฟชั่นใหม่ เราเริ่มอยากลองซื้อมาเลี้ยงบ้างแล้ว
น้ำท่วมที่หนองคายทำให้ผักสวนครัวตายเกือบหมด เราจึงซื้อเมล็ดพันธ์ุผักหลายอย่างไปให้คนสวนปลูกไว้กินต่อไป ตอนนี้เราแทบไม่เหลือผักสดไว้กินแล้ว เม็ดผักที่นี่ดีตรงที่ ไม่ได้ผ่านการตัดต่อพันธุกรรม และเป็นพันธุ์ที่ผ่านการพัฒนามาให้ดีขึ้น เมล็ดที่เกิดใหม่สามารถนำไปเพาะปลูกได้ เมล็ดทั่วไปของทุนใหญ่ๆได้ผ่านการตัดต่อพันธุกรรม เพื่อให้เกษตรกรต้องซื้อเมล็ดพืชใหม่ทุกปี เขาไม่สามารถเก็บเมล็ดและพัฒนาสายพันธ์เองได้ ต่อไปเมล็ดพืชพื้นเมืองและท้องถิ่นจะค่อยๆสูญหายไป และเกษตรจะไม่มีเมล็ดพืชเป็นของตนเอง
