Being a fresh Swiss citizen also means to me that it is time to start exploring the Alps. I already started a little bit with this by Biking up Mount Pilatus, but today I found that it was time to start some hiking. And where to better start than just around the corner
Mount Rigi here I come!!
Now let me start with getting one thing straight. Hiking in Switzerland is not for the weakhearted people in bad shape.
Let me give an example while explaining this. This hike today is categorized as categorie T1, which means that your grandmother should be able to to it. But what reality is, is that even though this was most likely on of the most easiest hikes in entire Switzerland, you still need to have some kind of shape going on. Because yes, in this image the path was paved, but that isn't everywhere. And yes, although it was flat here, this easy hike had 'still only' 200 meters of altitude difference in there. The bottomline is:
Know what your limits are and don't go alone!

With a group of random people who all like to hike we decided to start on this hike. Some were up here before, and some were new to it. Mount Rigi has about 120 km of hiking routes in total on it, so you can really decide for yourself what you want.
You can walk up from either Kussnacht or Arth-Goldau or decide to take a train or a gondola

I have to say, taking the Rigi Bahn up from Arth Goldau was a whole adventure on itself. With buying a day card for 36 Francs you can use all options of public transportation. Most people in the train with us?? Chinese people who make selfies in the summit and then take the train down again.

Or you can park a little bit higher and take the gondola to the Scheidegg peak of the Rigi. We used the gondola to get back down again, but this looked a bit more like the option for locals with dogs and so. What is more convenient about the little train, is that it has multiple stops in there but all sort of Alp cabins, and where there are intersections of the walking routes. And wauw, Rigi has a lot of huts on there. We were even joking about make a pubcrawl at every hut and having a beer and selling this as a concept. I am sure it would work, what do you think? :D
One other thing that is a definite plus about the gondola is that it is fast. In about 6 minutes you are up or down, while the train takes about 25 minutes to go up. Downside, the gondola only takes 6 minutes. Checking out views is also a nice day off right??
Now remember, going up a mountain is not always a guarantee for nice views. Clouds pass by often and fast, but when they decide to stay in place, you can forget about your nice view. It will only be, white and more white
But when the clouds break open?? Your reward will be there!!
For me it was super fun to see so far in the distance because of the fact that had been biking around so much before in the region. It was easy to recognize so many places around the lake, and I was really amazed how clear the sky was and how far you then can see.
This can also have a downside, you can see all too well how far down it is, hahaha!
If you ever have the chance, go up Mount Rigi and really take the time for a decent 2/3 hour hike on a clear day. You will totally not regret it!
