In the picturesque village of Aetofolia (eagle’s nest), built high on the slope of the “North Mountain” of Tinos island in Greece (see photo below), you will find the Kounaria family run tavern where I and my husband have enjoyed some truly great meals during our many visits to this Greek island.
The tavern, situated in the village’s main square next to a Catholic Church and other beautiful derelict buildings, offers you a choice of tables on the main square as well as in the main building. I however, prefer the tavern’s balcony area where you can take in the area’s view while sipping on shots of homemade Tsipouro (pomace brandy) or local wine . . . as well as being protected from the island’s many gusty winds!
On our recent visit, we opted for a dinner menu that consisted of truly simple, high quality island specialties cooked with fresh locally grown produce.
To begin with we enjoyed some awesome tasting lemon marinated artichokes, homemade cheeses (young and aged) as well as zucchini & pumpkin pies served with steamed string beans (ambelofasola) . . . and then went on to enjoy perfectly grilled beef patties with home cut fries. All purely divine!
For a sweet ending, we were offered one of the best tasting pasteli (honey sesame sweet) that I’ve had in Greece . . . . served on fresh lemon leaves from the garden. A real treat that reflected the cook’s skills and the quality of the honey used in making it!
If ever you happen to visit Tinos island . . . I highly recommend this lovely tavern . . . where you will enjoy really tasty and truly genuine Greek food!
