Browsing the Hobby Store
I don’t eat out or order takeout very often, but I ordered pizza for a special occasion the other day. While waiting for it to be ready, I went to a hobby store in town because my husband wanted to look around. It had been a while since we last visited the store, even though we often browse the display windows while shopping weekly.
This store feels like a giant toy box for everyone. In Japan, there’s a quirky bookstore chain called Village Vanguard. These stores sell not only books, but also toys, gadgets, and all kinds of hobby-related items. Once you enter, you always end up staying much longer than you planned. I think places like this are wonderful because people of all ages and genders can enjoy them. You never have to worry about the other person getting bored—everyone finds something interesting to look at.
Back to this hobby store, it has a similar atmosphere to those Japanese bookstores. Almost everyone can enjoy browsing the shelves. There aren’t many elegant or luxurious products, but that’s part of the charm. It’s simply fun to look around.
There are comics, graphic novels, all kinds of books, secondhand books, records, cards, classic DVDs, games, board games, figures, clothes, and much more. The chef at the pizza shop said the pizza would take about 20 minutes, but honestly, you could easily spend much longer than that in this store if you really enjoy hobbies and collectibles.
I don’t really listen to CDs anymore, but some people still love physical media like CDs, DVDs, records, and even VHS tapes. Retro items continue to fascinate many people.
There were also regular magazines and comics. I still love MAD Magazine because the illustrations and humour are so great.
One aisle was filled with secondhand books. The staff members were very friendly and knowledgeable. If you asked where something was, they answered quickly and knew exactly where to find it. There was even an Asian section.
They also had Japanese manga, and the selection was surprisingly up to date. Someone had left a copy of My Hero Academia in the retro section.
The sci-fi, fantasy, and hardcover horror sections looked especially exciting. There were many classic horror books on the shelves, including collections by Stephen King. Right below the scary books were colourful children’s books. I noticed many kids and parents in the store. The children looked so happy and focused while choosing cards, books, and games.
There was also a great selection of figures. The Peanuts figures looked especially cute. I used to collect many kinds of figures myself, especially American toys. Some of them became quite rare, but eventually I stopped collecting and sold everything. Still, I’m always drawn to these displays, even if it’s only for looking.
Wow, some of the boxes were beautiful too. If I still collected hobby goods, I would definitely want to display them in a hobby room.
The clothing section was also interesting. I even found a shirt from my favourite team. There were sports shirts, movie shirts, character shirts, musician shirts, gaming shirts, and more. Some of these kinds of shirts are extremely expensive in Japan, but here they seemed fairly reasonable, around $20 to $50.
Near the counter, there were even more figures. Once you decide to buy something and head to the cashier, your eyes somehow become even busier because there’s still so much more to look at.
I especially love checking out dice. I used to own many colourful dice from casinos and board games. I particularly liked 20-sided dice and clear-colored ones. One of my students is really into Dungeons & Dragons, and I think he would absolutely love this store.
There was even a Dragon Ball figure! When I was younger, I especially liked Bulma because her fashion and style were so cool. I also spotted a vintage Ghostbusters Stay Puft Marshmallow Man action figure waiting quietly for someone to notice it. It was in very good condition, and the price was around $45.
I really enjoyed browsing the store while waiting for the pizza. Spending time inside this giant toy box was so much fun. It’s nice to know there are still many people who quietly enjoy music, books, comics, figures, and hobbies in their own personal way.

ホビーストアをぶらぶら
普段、外食やテイクアウトをあまりしませんが、先日ちょっとした特別な日にピザを注文しました。焼き上がるまで時間があったので、主人がちょっとだけ見たいと言っていた町のホビーショップへ行きました。毎週買い物の時に外からショーウィンドウはよく見ていたのですが、中に入るのは久しぶりでした。
このお店は、まるでみんなのための大きなおもちゃ箱みたいな場所です。日本にも ヴィレッジヴァンガード という個性的な本屋がありますね。本だけではなく、おもちゃや雑貨、いろいろなホビー商品が並んでいて、一度入ると予定よりずっと長居してしまいます。こういうお店は、年齢や性別を問わず楽しめるところが良いと思います。相手を待たせる心配をしなくていいのもよいところです。ほとんどの人が何かしら気になるものを見つけられるからです。
このホビーショップも、そんな日本の本屋さんに少し似た雰囲気があります。高級感あふれる豪華商品が並んでいるわけではありませんが、見て回るだけでとても楽しいのです。
コミック、グラフィックノベル、さまざまな本、古本、レコード、カード、昔ながらのDVD、ゲーム、ボードゲーム、フィギュア、服など、本当にいろいろなものがあります。ピザ屋の店員さんは２０分くらいでできますと言っていましたが、こういうお店を本気で楽しむなら、２０分では全然足りません。
私はもうCDを聴くことはありませんが、CDやDVD、レコード、さらにはビデオテープのような実物を好む人もまだたくさんいるのだと思います。レトロなものは、今でも多くの人にとって魅力的なのでしょう。
普通の雑誌やコミックもありました。 MAD Magazine がとても好きです。イラストやユーモアの雰囲気がすごく良いと思います。
この通路は古本コーナーです。店員さんたちはとても親切で知識も豊富です。本の場所を聞くと、どこにあるかすぐに答えてくれます。アジア関連のコーナーもあります。
日本の漫画も置いてあり、品揃えもかなり新しいです。誰かが 僕のヒーローアカデミア をレトロ商品の棚に置きっぱなしにしていました。
SF、ファンタジー、ハードカバーのホラー本コーナーは特にワクワクしました。棚にはクラシックなホラー作品がたくさん並んでいて、スティーヴン・キング の作品集もありました。怖い本の下には、かわいらしい子ども向けの本も並んでいます。店内には親子連れもいて、子どもたちはカードや本、ゲームを真剣に選んでいて、とても楽しそうでした。
フィギュアコーナーも充実していました。ピーナッツのフィギュアが特にかわいかったです。昔、特にアメリカのおもちゃ系フィギュアをたくさん集めていました。かなりレアなものもありましたが、今はもう集めるのをやめて全部手放しました。それでも、こういうものを見るとやっぱり惹かれてしまいます。
箱のデザインも本当に素敵でした。もし今でもコレクションしていたら、ホビールームに飾っておきたいと思います。
服のコーナーも面白いです。私の好きなチームのシャツもありました。スポーツ、映画、キャラクター、ミュージシャン、ゲーム系など、いろいろなTシャツが並んでいました。日本だとかなり高いものもありますが、こちらでは２０〜５０ドルくらいで比較的リーズナブルでした。
レジ周辺にはさらにフィギュアが並んでいます。本を買おうとレジへ向かっても、また目が忙しくなってしまうでしょう。
サイコロを見るのも大好きです。昔はカジノやボードゲーム系のカラフルなサイコロを持っていました。特に２０面ダイスや透明カラーのものが好きでした。生徒さんの１人は ダンジョンズ&ドラゴンズ にかなりハマっているので、このお店は絶対お気に入りです。
さらに、ドラゴンボール のフィギュアもありました！私は子どもの頃、特に ブルマ が好きでした。ファッションやスタイルがすごくかっこよいからです。それから、ゴーストバスターズ のマシュマロマンのヴィンテージフィギュアも、誰かに気づいてもらうのを待っているように立っていました。状態もかなり良くて、価格は４５ドルくらいでした。
ピザができるまでの間、このお店をぶらぶらする時間を本当に楽しめました。この大きなおもちゃ箱の中で過ごす時間はとても楽しかったです。音楽、本、漫画、フィギュアなどを、自分なりに静かに楽しんでいる人たちがたくさんいるのだなあと感じました。
