Spring on the Mountain
People who live up in the mountains need a little more patience for the feeling of spring to arrive. In town, I see some flowers blooming earlier than they do here in the mountains, even though it’s only a 10–15-minute drive away. I finally feel the full energy of spring on my property and throughout the neighbourhood.
The spring air is very fresh and gentle, birds are actively singing, flowers are blooming happily, and the sky is beautifully blue and clear. On the other hand, many different kinds of bugs appear, such as black flies, no-see-ums, worms, bees, wasps, horse flies, and even ticks. The black flies, no-see-ums, and horse flies are especially bad because they bite us a lot. They are quite aggressive. I have severe allergies, and they seem to come to me constantly. Once they bite me, my body reacts strongly. Ticks are also scary for both humans and dogs. Luckily, my dog is white, so I can find them easily. I can avoid the flies once the spring breeze starts. They disappear quickly after that.
Well, from now on, I would like to talk about the beautiful side of spring in the mountains. Almost all of the trees have started smiling, and they have become so chatty. I can hear them around my property as well. I noticed that there are many young pine trees, birch trees, trembling aspens, and more. The young trees look so pretty and healthy. Unfortunately, I lost a few of our trees during storms over the past few years. My husband cut up those fallen trees this spring. They will become our firewood for the coming winter.
The apple trees have started blooming beautifully. Apple blossoms are so lovely. The Apple Blossom Festival is happening this week. This 92-year-old historical festival is a very popular event for local people as well as tourists.
This bird cherry tree is such a beautiful symbol on my property. Usually, it starts blooming in the middle of May. Now, it looks so gorgeous and graceful. This year, a bird family is living in it. They sing every day, especially in the morning and during the daytime. I think my husband trimming the broken branches earlier this spring helped the flowers become especially healthy.
Also, woodpeckers are very active on my property this year. My dog has become friends with one of them. The young, handsome woodpecker usually starts pecking at our fence very early in the morning. When my dog wakes up, he goes outside with me to see the woodpecker. Sometimes, I can hear them very early in the morning from my bedroom. The pecking sound feels like a rhythmic clock or something similar. It’s not as noisy as you might imagine.
Almost all of the dandelions are finishing blooming and turning into fluffy seed heads. I love dandelion fluff very much. My dog really likes visiting the big field near my house. However, when manure is spread on the field, we can’t visit it. Luckily, this year the farmer is letting the land rest, so we can visit it sometimes. Still, we have to be careful about ticks once the grass grows tall.

山の春
山に住んでいる人たちは、春らしい空気を感じるまでに、通常よりも少しだけ長めの忍耐が必要です。町では、ここよりも早く花が咲いているのを見かけます。たった１０〜１５分ほど車で走っただけで、山とは季節の進み方が違います。ようやく私の家の敷地や近所全体にも、本格的な春の息吹を感じられるようになりました。
春の空気はとても新鮮でやわらかく、鳥たちは元気にさえずり、花々は嬉しそうに咲き、空は青く澄み渡っています。その一方で、ブラックフライ、ヌカカ、小さな虫、蜂、スズメバチ、アブ、さらにはダニまで、さまざまな虫たちも出現しはじめます。特にブラックフライやヌカカ、アブはとても厄介で、かなり刺されます。本当に攻撃的なので困ります。かなりひどいアレルギーがあるからか、なぜか虫たちがしつこく寄ってきます。一度刺されると、体が強く反応してしまいます。ダニも、人間にも犬にも怖い存在です。でも幸い、私の犬は白いので、ダニを見つけやすいです。春の強い風が吹き始めると、ハエたちは少し避けやすくなり、しばらくの間どこかに消えてくれます。
さて、ここからは山の春の美しい部分についてお話ししたいと思います。ほとんどの木々が笑顔になってきたように見え、とてもおしゃべりな感じになりました。私の敷地の中でも、その声が聞こえてくるようです。あっという間に若い松の木、白樺、ポプラなどがたくさん育っていることにも気づきました。若い木々はとても美しく、健康そうです。残念ながら、ここ数年の嵐で何本かの木がダメになってしまいました。今年の春、主人がその倒れた木々を切ってくれました。それらは次の冬の薪になります。
リンゴの木の花も美しく咲き始めました。りんごの花は本当にきれいです。今週はアップルブロッサム・フェスティバルが開催されています。この９２年続く歴史あるお祭りは、地元の人々だけでなく観光客にもとても人気があります。
このバードチェリーの木は、私の敷地の中で特別な象徴のような存在です。いつも５月半ば頃に満開になりますが、ちょうど今は本当に優雅で美しく見えます。今年は鳥の家族がこの木に住んでいます。毎日、特に朝から昼間にかけて、その鳥たちの声が聞こえてきます。今年の早春に主人が折れた枝を剪定してくれたので、そのおかげで花がとても元気に咲いているのだと思います。
また、今年はキツツキたちもとても活発です。私の犬は、そのうちの一羽と仲良くなりました。その若くてハンサムなキツツキは、朝早くから私たちのフェンスをコツコツ叩き始めます。私の犬は起きると、私と一緒に外へ出て、そのキツツキを見に行きます。時には寝室から、その音がかなり早朝から聞こえてくることもあります。木を叩く音は、まるでリズミカルな時計のようです。想像するほど騒がしい音ではありません。
ほとんどのタンポポは咲き終わり、綿毛になり始めています。私はタンポポの綿毛がとても好きです。私の犬は、家の近くにある大きな野原へ行くのが大好きです。でも、そこに肥料がまかれると、しばらくの間は行くことができません。今年は農家の方がその土地を休ませるようなので、ときどき訪れることができそうです。ただ、草が伸びてくるとダニには気をつけなければいけません。
