I just wanted to share thoughts and hopefully get some feedback from the community regarding American Silver Eagles and their place in your stack.
When I first started stacking, I almost exclusively went with ASE. They are a coin I still like, but haven't purchased in some time. I will try to outline my pros and cons below:
Pros:
ASE is probably the world's most recognized silver coin. If SHTF I think this will be a go-to coin, as it's trusted and recognized by many people.
The coin itself is beautiful
Premiums are reasonable
Cons:
While I noted above that it is a beautiful coin, and it is, the coin itself essentially stays the same design year-after-year, except for the date. For me this becomes a bit tiresome, which is partially why I'm drawn to other government coins, such as the Lunar series, that are updated yearly.
Because the designs stay pretty consistent, their values may not go up as much over the years beyond the spot price of silver. I know there are exceptions to this, such as the 1996 coin.
While the premiums, depending on where you buy, are typically responsible, do these premiums outweigh being able to buy more silver? For example, buying a generic round that has lower premiums allow you to buy more silver.
Does the stacker community have any input on the ASE?
