The question "what would you do for society if you had all the resources you needed?", says that resources would be there for whatever a specific need is. Whatever the "doing" for society you want to materialize, the requirements or needs to actualize that action would be fulfilled by resources being present in whatever form. Whatever your goal for society, you would have the resources.
Energy
As it stands, the world is driven by energy demand. Energy makes everything happen in our modern world, from the electronics we use, to the transportation that interconnects the people, resources and economies of the planet.
Having energy resources gives us the freedom to move around and have access to so much. But at the same time, it also keeps us dependent on the energy moguls like big oil that keep us hooked like a drug, coming back for more, always. This keeps us dependent on them and the use of oil. If we want a truly independent world for all, having energy independence would be a huge step to liberating ourselves from the clutches of the oil barons.
From Scarcity to Abundance
Our demand for the scarce resource puts us under the thumb of the big businesses. If I, or all of us, had all the resources we needed, then this would seem to indicate a transition from scarcity to abundance. The abundance of energy would free us from our dependence on needing to buy it, and liberate our chains of economic survivability to some degree. There would still be the need for food, water and shelter.
But if I had all the resources needed, and my needs were to free society by creating a world of abundance and not scarcity, then the food, water, and shelter issue would also be dealt with, as all the resources would be there for me to make it happen.
Resource Source?
Where do all the resources I need come from? Who knows. Maybe everyone is working together to create a better world together. We would all work for the betterment of all, to ensure we all had the basics of living: food, water and shelter. It could take us 1 day per week of common work to provide for our basic needs. Then we could be free to pursue activities and jobs that would not be restricting us from a position of economic survivability to further our existence. Anyone could truly do anything they want, hopefully pursuing avenues that help to progress mankind and the planet of other species to a better future together.
But, maybe we would have the technology to create anything from a source of free energy, like so-called "zero point" energy, etc. Maybe we would have replicators like in Star Trek than can materialize anything we need.
Freedom
If we have technology making it a reality, like access to a free energy source, then the whole equation for independence and freedom of individuals comes down to energy freedom and independence. Free energy technology is at the root of maintaining our modern way of living and being the most free.
Freed from the enslavement of jobs people don't to do but need to just to survive; just to be able to pay for food, water, shelter and the electricity and other energy we use in our modern lives. We could then be again free to pursue whatever avenue in life we choose, unrestricted by the economic survival needs that are currently imposed upon us to exist. People could choose to do things that help benefit themselves and others, progressing humanity to greater heights imaginable.
Of course, the way we live now isn't written in stone. We don't need to live this way with so much dependent on energy being used to facilitate our way of life. We could live without energy in our lives. We could end transportation and electronics use. But that would be like turning the clock back on human history and making things harder for most of mankind, as it was in the past where survival was difficult and life was harsh.
That doesn't mean we can't be more independent locally, while still having some things imported, while still having technology in our lives. Regardless of energy independence, the future I would like us to create is one were food is everywhere, with food forests and veganic permaculture being used to create near self-sustaining harmony in how plants are grown.
Imagine seeing a city with green everywhere, with plants and trees on all the streets, bearing fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. You would go outside your home and abundance would be all around. Food would be everywhere for us to benefit from. It has limitations when winter comes, maybe forcing us to depend on transportation more. But we could also have indoor greenhouses in rooftops growing all year round. Urban farming can change things. The way we live can change radically for the better, giving us more freedom and independence, even if we have limited energy resources.
Purpose and Meaning in Life
Having all the resources need to do something, I would free our lives and existence from needing to work jobs we don't want just so we can survive and exist. I would create more abundance and freedom. I imagine a world where people would do things that mattered more to them. Hopefully things that mattered. Things that benefited others as well, not just themselves.
I don't imagine a world of people who just sit on their couches and play video games all the time. That would not be a positive direction for humanity. We already have too much of that :P I think given the opportunity to learn anything for free, people would become more actualized and realized as individuals. They would have greater existential conviction. They would have greater meaning, purpose, drive and objectives for their lives and existence. I see a better world emerging for each individual and for us all.
What do you think? Does that sound like a society you would like to live in? :) I think most of us would like to more food growing everywhere. Most utopian art has more green in it. We know there is something missing from our drab and dead concrete jungle way of living. It will make us more free and more "alive", both in physical and psychological health.
