Fires are in the news today, but are you familiar with the Black Forest Fire in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in June 2013? My wife and I were living nearby and took in her sister and brother-in-law who were forced to evacuate. In fact, during the early hours of the fire. it was my wife who prodded her sister into packing, or they would have waited till the last minute. We all pitched in to help their elderly neighbors get out safely. Then, even we had to pack for pre-evacuation, but luckily never had to go. My wife's niece, who lived in an area of Black Forest that stayed safe, helped to take in animals that were wandering, including this miniature horse whom she named Smokey. In the end, two people died and over 500 homes were destroyed. Luckily a friend of ours who worked as a volunteer firefighter kept my sister-in-law's house safe. It was a long and tense ten days though.
