It is morning and the smell of brand new coffee fills our noses and hearts with life. Are you familiar with this feeling? Then you can understand why I dedícate a few lines to this beverage, especially around these corners where we find ourselves sitting in front of a screen and brainstorming for ideas to write down. Very often a cup of coffee is what gets us started with or through our posts.
Coffee is the world's most consumed drink after water and tea. Each year, over 10 million tons of coffee are produced worldwide. According to the International Coffee Organization (yes, there is one), over 1.5 billion people drink coffee every day. So you can imagine the significance of this hot beverage in the daily life of people.
One of the most famous stories about its origin is that in coffee berry forests on the Ethopian plateau, centuries ago, a goat herder discovered coffee after noticing his goats became more energetic and would stay up all night after eating the berries. He told the abbot of the local monastery, who made a drink with the berries. Afterwards he realized the drink kept him alert. So he shared it with the other monks and they would drink it to get through the long hours of evening prayer. Other monasteries joined and this drink began to be spread.
Some drink coffee for the effects of caffeine which increases energy levels, productivity and brain function, or to stay awake. While others drink it to feel relaxed; some people find the smell and taste of coffee to be comforting. Antioxidants of coffee protect the brain cells from stress. And certain people just have coffee when socializing.
Coffee isn't just a hot drink, but it is part of culture. It is a symbol for gatherings, studies, friendship, dates.
I could even say there are translations for some sentences related to coffee, such as "Let's get some coffee" which could also mean "Let's go somewhere and talk", sometimes even without drinking coffee, or "would you like to have coffee with me?" as in "would you go on a date with me?", or at times when people come to your house unexpectedly, and you say "I'll make some coffee", meaning "I welcome you, or I'll take some time to talk with you". So coffee brings us together. Even for a spa day as the Japanese do in their swimming pool, yes, you heard it right, a pool literally filled with coffee!
