Just sharing a super simple recipe.
It is definitely not healthy due to the oil and frying but it is good. I used olive oil because it was what I had on hand but using an oil that is better for heating would work. Coconut oil would be fine.
What you need:
- Your favorite oil for heating or vegan butter
- Apples
- White onions
- Brown Sugar
- Cinnamon
- Pure maple syrup (optional)
I added the pure maple sugar just because I was running out of brown sugar but it was really good. However, brown sugar is much cheaper and what most recipes call for so don't worry about the maple syrup.
Step 1:
Chop up the apples and onions. I didn't take a photo because I wasn't planning to blog this until I realized how delicious it was turning out. But I didn't do anything special. Just chopped em both up kinda messily to be honest.
Step 2:
throw chopped up apples and onions in pan with generous buttery substance or oily substance over medium heat.
Step 3:
Add your brown sugar, cinnamon, syrup or what have you. I just added this to taste. Don't go too nuts on the sugar. Remember the apples are already sweet! Our goal is sweet and savory.
mmmmmm Breathe in the wonderful aroma as you wait for the onions to caramelize and the apples to get soft. Keep stirring them around and make sure nothing sticks.
I gotta be honest I didn't time it but you will see when the onions are translucent and test the apples with a fork. They should be quite soft when they are ready.
This is certainly not a health food and probably not a good every day food but is a delicious comfort food to enjoy every so often.
