일제시대, 일본은 조선의 궁궐, 경복궁 안에 조선총독부를 설치했습니다. 조선총독부 서쪽, 인왕산 너머 감옥을 짓고, 종로 감옥에 있던 500명을 데려와 가두었습니다. 1945년 광복할 때까지 여러 독립운동가들을 ‘경성감옥’에 가두고 핍박했습니다. 김구 선생이 수감되었던 곳이고, 유관순 열사는 이곳에서 꽃다운 목숨을 잃었습니다.
During the Japanese colonial rule, Japan established the chosun government-general in Gyeongbok Palace. In the west of the chosun government-general's Office, they built a prison beyond Inwang Mountain. It was where Kim Gu was confined, and Yu Gwan Soon lost her life.
해방 후 경성감옥은 서대문형무소가 되었습니다.
우연히 삼일절 날에 서대문형무소를 방문하게 되었습니다.
After liberation, Kyungsung prison became Seodaemun prison. I happened to visit the Seodaemun prison on 3.1.
추운 날씨인데도 많은 사람들이 모여들었습니다. 좁은 감옥과 차디찬 바닥, 얼마나 고통스러운 시간이었을지 저는 감히 가늠할 수가 없었습니다.
Even though it was cold, many people gathered. I did not dare to think how painful it was.
덕분에 저희가 오늘 이렇게 하루를 살아가게 되어서 감사합니다, 라는 마음조차 가볍게 느껴지는 그곳, 좀 따듯해지면 다시 한 번 더 찾아가야겠습니다.
