Hello fellow readers
It's that time again for our party to try and fix problems that are not their own. Today I decided to write a funnier than usual piece, so I hope you all enjoy it. Don't forget to read 's piece before you get started on mine.
Sebastian sat apart from the others. Not because he didn’t want company, but rather because he wanted Trix to speak to him first before Mortis. The revenant seemed to be in deep conversation with the two knights that had come with them. The woman, Anna, seemed to have finally managed to heal to such a level that she could wield a sword again. Good, because they needed another sword for what was to come.
Already Sebastian could hear the cries of the creatures in the forest. It didn’t scare him but rather filled him with excitement. The curse was excited that it would get to feed soon. It was so deep in his bones that he couldn’t help but feel happy, but he knew it wasn’t his true feelings, so, he sat alone.
“My king.” Said Trix from somewhere in the shadows that surrounded him.
“A king of nothing.” He murmured.
“Would you prefer me to call you my pet name for you?”
He blushed a little and shook his head, “Preferably not.”
She laughed but remained in the shadows. It was clear that she didn’t want the revenant to know that she was back from her mission.
“So?”
“The dragon is still missing but other than that, the mage and Lifedrinker are ready. Their spell looks far more complex than I could ever hope to understand.”
Sebastian listened to the tone of her voice. It wasn’t right, she was concerned over something, but she wasn’t sure how to frame her thoughts. Or perhaps she had, and she was concerned over his reaction.
“Out with it.” He said softly.
There was some silence before she said, “Something isn’t right.”
She materialised and sat down next to Sebastian and bowed her head. She continued with her voice barely above a whisper.
“The mage’s memories are jumbled, and he seems confused.”
Sebastian gave a sideways glance to his nephew who was laughing at something Derric had said. His sister also looked bemused but didn’t laugh.
“What are you thinking?” Sebastian asked her.
“I think the same you are, as you’re looking at the boy and wondering if there are more like them.”
Sebastian nodded his head, “We should tell the revenant that we believe the mage isn’t quite who he says he is.”
Just as Trix was about to answer, there was a commotion on the roof. Something heavy had landed on it. The rasp of metal echoed throughout the small church as swords were drawn.
“It’s not time yet.” Said Magna. “They can’t be attacking yet, right?”
There was furious scrambling and then several thumps as the heavy entity seemed to fall from the castle roof. The impact it made with the debris on the other side of the church doors attracted everyone’s attention. Then the scratching started.
Mortis purposefully made his way to the main door, ready for anything that would barge its way in.
“Ah! The package has arrived!” came the excited voice of Lucien and the Lifedrinker bound down the stairs.
Without warning anyone, he removed the large wooden plank that had served as the barricade preventing the main doors from opening. He threw the doors open and dragged what seemed to be a heavy burlap sack into the room. He then looked over his shoulder at Mortis and said, “Be a dear and get the door.”
Put off by the Lifedrinker’s nonchalant attitude at exposing them, the revenant quickly slammed the doors and returned to the barricade. Even though he had acted quickly, he had seen the hungry eyes looking at them from the edge of the forest. They were running out of time.
“Is that who I think it is?” asked Adiran as he limped down the stairs.
“Bruised and battered but yes.”
Lucien was so excited that Adrian couldn’t help but step closer to see what was in the sack. As soon as Lucien undid the knot, a familiar, scaley head popped up, taking a deep breath.
“Rhyn!” exclaimed the boy as he wrapped his arms around the Saurian’s neck.
The large lizard looks exhausted, bruised, and hungry. Yet, he still managed to flick his tongue at the boy a few times before he said, “Aye, it’s me.”
The reptile’s eyes turned to Lucien, and they seemed to darken.
“I no doubt have you to thank for my so-called rescue. Next time, remind your grunts that I have no wings, and dropping me from such a height could have killed me.”
Lucien waved the comment away and removed the Saurian from the bag.
“What happened to you?” asked Adrian.
“Well, you see, it’s quite an adventure. I was minding my own business as the war was brewing and then…”
Before the lizard could get another word out, Adiran was before him and pushed two fingers into his throat, effectively shutting his voice off.
“Uncle, what the hell!” demanded Adrian.
The lizard coughed a few times, wheezing to get breath. Adiran seemed unphased and continued to watch as Rhys lay spasming on the floor unable to draw breath.
“Was that necessary?” asked Lucien.
“It’s the only glyph I know that could possibly help.” Adiran knelt and gripped Rhys’s head, “Deep breaths, you’re fine, it’s just a glyph I put inside your throat. Deep breaths.”
“You did what? Why!” demanded Adrian.
“Well, how else am I going to get him to breathe fire on such short notice?”
