They all say, transparency breeds trust. Publish every salary, every bonus, every contract on a website, and maybe inequality can no longer be concealed. Employees will be able to accurately compare wages, bring injustice to light and bargain from a position of strength, not silence.
But information isnโt neutral.
The minute income is made public, jealousy is given a voice. Families will compare; friends will compete; employers will value individuals in numbers alone; criminals will see targets; society will use money instead of character to define the measure of a human being and private thoughts will become the indelible part of every man or woman.
Transparency might be the key for employers to have accountability. Invisible discrimination, salary disparities and oppressive work conditions may not be able to exist in open sunlight. Employees, who previously remained ignorant to the fact they were being taken advantage of, may finally push for equal treatment.
However, transparency might result in other types of pressure. Employers will perhaps be less inclined to accommodate workers' requests for more time off for fear of reprisal. Workers, who are earning insufficient income, may be stuck between a rock and a hard place, because even if they are being paid a good salary they will still be judged and resented. When such information is public, nobody has the capacity to survive their situation, but the human mind reduces itself to an object that needs to be placed under a microscope.
Will everybody lose out?
Not totally.
Some practices are benefited by information sharing. Without secrecy, it is difficult for people to engage in corrupt activities. However, complete disclosure without protection can harm individual privacy and safety and impact on interpersonal relations within society. Therefore, a healthy society requires a balance between the sharing of information for purposes of ensuring fairness, and the preservation of private spheres in order to uphold personal individuality.
Once the income of everybody is known by everyone else, money will cease to be a tool for survival and will instead become a public measure of value.
The story of human beings tells that the fear of hardship cannot compete with the shame of constant social comparison.
